I have added a shaft for the character to crawl down but when I connect the shaft to the room the wall disapears. Please help.

you must go into segment mode, select the room segment that has the wall you want, go into wall-only mode and repaint the wall. BTW, it's as well in the manual which you can find in the docs folder of your tgc folder on your harddrive as also in the tutorial videos found on the TGC site. Read. Watch. Understand.

I tried that but the segment keeps covering the shaft.

When I saw the title i thought "the shaft" sounded like a good name for an STD.

Then you did it wrong.

Pick a room. Click he segments tab. Click on paint walls only. Click on the place where your wall has vanished, the arrow pointing at the gap.
