First of all, mods if this is against the rules, my apologies and feel free to delete this post.

I'm planning on coming up with a character model pack once I have finished my current project (give it a week or 2).
4 characters, rigged and uv mapped, with some standard animations.
Question here is if it is allowed to use the standard FPSC animations for commercial models ? Would be thankful for clarification.

The models would be usable in FPSC, DBPRO and anything else that can make use of the .x format. In addition you'll get the models in .3ds and .obj . Textures would be 1024x1024, diffuse, normal map and most likely specular map.
Now I would like to survey which genre is most popular. I was first thinking of a sci-fi pack of 4 hot females but maybe something different is more desired.
Please leave your suggestions, might even do a mixed pack depending on the outcome. Thanks for the input.

We'll I'm looking for a model pack with old fashioned soldiers with swords and spears and axes. I was looking specifically for a armor clad elf girl, a gladiator style guy, a armor clad Ninja with something else besides a sword as a weapon and a regular infantry unit with a sword. Hope this input gets chosen.

I am looking for some medieval fantasy characters but more universal ones, i am getting almost all the fantasy packs being developed currently and the ones already in the store to be used in my game but really i need ones which can be used all around so maybe several models but with lots of texture variations of each model.

Bandit/Highwayman/Rogue style thing.
Generally small, uses knives, hooded or having a bandana over his face.
Dark Knight, Knight in dark armor, evil looking.
Priest/Mage, Robed figure, magical.
Animals: ( Not sure if this is what you meant but still..)
Wolf
Bear
rat

Thats about it from me

Here's a twist for ya..

I'm searching for townspeople. Men, women, and children. Also dogs, cats, squirrels, horses, cows, chickens and sheep. Deer would be cool too.

The genre should be similar to medieval peasants, but these people are actually in the future. (think Firefly style.)

My hope is to get 2-3 models of each of the humans with 4 or 5 different texture maps to represent different skin color and base clothing. The animals could each have 1 generic model with 2 or 3 texture maps to provide some variation. (1 texture would do for the chickens, squirrels and sheep.)

Add this "Knight in dark armor, evil looking" to my list for another cool model person. So 2 votes for that.

@KISTech- check out cosmic prophet's free model thread he gave away a whole bunch of good free 3d animals. Also, Jon fletcher made a peasant girl for a model pack, but not sure which one.

Thanks for the feedback. Maybe I'll just make the models individually available for purchase on my website. What do you think would be a fair price for a single character ?

I would say if you are comparing to some of the $20 model packs on here(tgc forum) with 5-6 characters with different textures, than I would sell 1 character for $10 each.

Hmm i havent seen the quality of your models but normally for a single model $7.5-10 maybe more depending on if its animated and the overall quality of it.

@Beast, thanks. I've been watching the Fantasy pack by Jon but there's not really an idea when he'll have it finished and release it. The animals in Cosmic Prophet's threads were ok. I might be able to take those and give them a little animation.

@Irradic, love the last few screenshots. I could use a couple of those for a particular type of NPC I have in mind.

yup really i just need anything generic fantasy, jons models are great but you can hardly have alot of them near each other because they are all too specific.
Maybe just a orc in some armour, with several weapon variations
a blacksmith
just some soldiers of good in normal armour but with a helmet on so they dont look all the same when there near each other.
and then maybe some evil soldiers, could probably use the same mesh but different texture as the light ones, or maybe just edit the mesh a bit.

Fantasy is where its at
Thanks
Svothe

Why not make the bodies only then add clothing etc as separate models? This way your model above could be futuristic or medievil with a wardrobe change.

I'm hunting around right now for just that type of model(s) for use in an RPG. Instead of 100s of complete models to reflect different gear I want to use a single body and swap gear in and out for different armour pieces and weapons/tools.

That's basically what I'm after. I found a "villager" pack that does that. It has 3 base models, and then different models to add to it for head, hair, shirt, etc..

I'm finding it difficult to track down any models of kids. How am I going to make a growing colony on another planet without kids..

@Violent Pigeon

Honestly I don't have an average charge rate. Most of my clients are students with a limited budget. Basically I'll just hear how much they have available for a commission and then consider if it will be worth my while. Since I do the projects after work.

However I some times get 5$ offers, with the reason that model packs are being sold for around 30$.
It just has to be considered that unlike in a model pack, each commissioned model is exclusive and can not be resold indefinitely.
But then other times I'm surprised that some clients actually pay pretty well.

Anyway, if anyone wants to inquire about my commission service, head to my website.

@Irradic- Your model's are great, but i'm sure you would like big profit on your custom model's, since they are of a high quality. Because I was looking for a good modeller who I could pay a price and get to say as to what 5-6 characters look like and use in my commercial game, but after (the modeller person made them) they could also sell them as a model pack of their's and they would have the right's and I would use the models royalty free to use for me or anyone, just I had say as to what to make them look like. But there isn't to many like that, that would like to make 2 profits. Anywho sorry for rambling, I just love eye candy model's for my game. All the best,

Jared

The minimum for a character would be around 50$. Now depending on what the client requests it could cost more. Normal maps would require me to do a high poly version (sculpt) which takes extra time. Now compared to studios that take 200$ for a single commission it is still considerable cheap. But then there are not many who would or can spend 50$ or more on a model. But then asking less is no longer in relation to the time and work which is invested in a high quality model. Yes that is the disadvantage if you can't resell the model like in a model pack. You get paid once and then that's it. If the concept art was created by the client it is his intellectual property and I'm only being hired to create a 3D version of it.
As to reselling commissions with permission, in most cases the designs are too specific to interest other people since they were created for a certain client and project. So it's questionable how well it would sell as a model pack. But depending on the models and design it could be worth considering.

So if I understood you right, you are looking for someone who would create this 5-6 models after your design, but in order to get it cheaper you would give the permission to resell these models ?

Well maybe we can discuss this in private, my contact info can be found on my website.

I'm sorry Irradic for ranting on about good character modeller's. Although, I will email you later this week about this conversation, but I have major releases for my game this week (like forum for my game and website for my game) and I want those out before I contact you. So when I do there is more to my project than show/ gloss. If you know what I mean.

I think thats a great idea an animal pack. Not quite the same as a character pack but hey if you can model them and people want them

An animal pack would be very useful. I've seen separate animal models here and there. Some animated, most not. Animals such as birds, butterflies, squirrels add ambience to the environment, and animals like horses, cows, oxen, buffalo, deer, sheep, and pigs could very useful in the storyline of many types of games.

..furthermore they wouldn't have to be just used in fantasy packs.

If I had both the time and experience I would have a go myself but even though I now have deep paint 3d which I thought would help with my UV painting issues I still can't advance much. Mainly because I can't find a good enough program to unbound the mesh's into a usable UV.

Ooh also, maybe a good pack you could make:
American soldiers, because FPSC is the general large area of this forum i think FPSC ready soldiers, like Desert camo ones with helmets and forest camo ones and some terrorist style ones would sell well, i dont have any need for them myself but i think they would sell hugely with the FPSC group and with any FPS style games or warfare games.

Thanks again for all the messages. I have following plan at the moment. Once I'm done with the commission I will clean up the cyber agent and do some different texture variations (hair colors, different colored coats). Probably 3-4 different versions with different hairstyles, with and with out mask etc.
I'll have him either for sale or as donation item ( for example, for a minimum donation of 10$) on my website.

The model will be:
fully animated
w/ normal map and specular map
3-4 different variations
different texture / color schemes

I will follow this up with 2-3 cyper punk models. The whole thing will be for the FPSC crowd.
Then I will start work on either a fantasy themed pack (final fantasy inspired) or a sci-fi grunt theme ala gears of war.

I vote fantasy.

Also your Syndicate model looks like it could easily be turned into a ninja character as well. Replace the legs with pants and tabi footwear and your all set.
