For multi threading purposes I am looking for a command that simply states how many cores the user's processor has so that I can specify how many threads to create. I believe there a command in DarkGDK but I'd prefer it if it was not a command requiring DirectX to be installed.

There is a WinAPI function which returns this, among other things: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms683194.aspx
