Hi,

My Geforce 8800GT (yay) wont work (aww)

it says there is no graphics card in my computer, any ideas why from that explination?

P.S. its a PCIe 2 card, but thats meant to be backwards and forwards compatible with a PCIe computer

also, i am led to believe it is broke, is this likely?

edit: the 8500 worked and that uses the same technology with less processecers and that, so the 8800 GT should work right?

I know this may sound obvious did you plug in the 6 pin PCI express power connector into your card? The 8800 GT needs more power to run, and what size is your Power Supply, I have a 750 watt power supply and when I had an 8800 GT it worked fine, I know the 8500 doesn't use as much power as the 8800 series cards. And if your power supply does not put out enough power the card will not run properly and can cause you PC to lock up and crash or not boot at all, And PCI express 2.0 is backwards compatible with 1.0,

Minimum power supply for 8800GT should be 400W. Recommended 500W and up. I just got my 8800GT Overclock edition yesterday

I also want to add that it needs to be a good quality name brand power supply that is actually putting out the number rating that’s on its label (400 or 500 watts), because there are allot of junk power supplies on the market that are cheap and state on their label that they are 500 watt but in reality they are not, they have a peak power of 500 watts but they are not a continuous 500 watt and that is what you want continuous, and I would recommend a 80 plus certified power supply because they are 80% energy efficient and generate less heat and put out cleaner power, examples of name brand are: Antec, CORSAIR, PC Power & Cooling, Thermaltake, CoolMaster, Enermax, just to name a few.

How many watts is your power supply?

I took out the 400w that came with my system that had a 8500gt.
I replaced it with a 600w when I bought and installed my 8800gt.

I would not suggest running a minimum, because different systems have different components sharing that power supply.
So, a quad core is going to need more power than a dual core, and multiple hard drives require more power than a single one, etc.
Another reason not to run the minimum power supply is that you can't upgrade anything else later without possible power problems.

If it isn't seated properly, then it won't detect it.
You may also want to try to re-seat it, because sometimes the pins don't line up and make contact right when you push it in.

I have good quality FSP-Retail Blue Storm II 500W.
I did some research at what really matters for a gfx card is the +v12 rail(s).
My psu has got two +v12 rails : +12V1 and +12V2. Each has got 18 A, what means they make togather 36A.
Minimum for 8800GT is 22-24A depending on what brand card are you using. I think 8800 GTX needed 28A.

Iv read that people can run 8800gt on even 380W power supplies what are good brand. Guess they have good V12 support.

Also you can try this out :

http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

Mine pc needed only 382W.

1) Minimum for 8800gt is 400W, from where did you read 550W ?

2) Before wasting your money on new psu. Can you check how many A has your +12V rail(s) got ? It should be marked on a sticker on left side of psu.

3)And could you please give some details of what power supply you have got ? Brand, website link etc.

4) Have you tried others games ? Usually if your lacking psu power for gfx card your pc should give random blue screens and freezes.

I just wanted to add that everyone is under the assumption that multiple 12+ rail power supplies are the way to go but all the experts are saying no, they are recommending a single 12 volt rail PSU the reason why is because no power is wasted with a single 12 volt rail PSU. Because if you have a multiple 12v rail PSU and one of the rails is not being used it is wasted power, also if the 12v PCI express rail does not have enough amps on multi 12v rail PSU your video cards will not function properly, also that is why all the top brands like PC Power & Cooling have been making high watt single 12volt rail PSU now.

ahh.. I dident know that your pc dosent even work.
Is this your power supply ? http://www.colors-it.com.cn/03_products/pro_show.asp?pro_id_search=86&max_id_search=5&min_id_search=21

It has got 25A and one +12v rail. I googled around little bit and found out that 8800GT needs minimum 22-26A depending on the brand and power usage.
So yeah, you would need to go over to a more powerful power supply.

Well, it's not the watts but the amps. My power supply is rated under what it should be in watts, but I have correct number of amps so it worked fine.
