Dark GDK / .x/.3ds model question

i was wondering if i have to manually apply the texture to a .x or .3ds model. I noticed in the tutorial that they didn't need to do anything else but load the model and it appeared textured, but when i load a .x model , all i get is an untextured model.

if the model has been textured in the software it was created in, then the texture is loaded automatically in GDK.

you have to make sure that the texture picture files are in the same path of your .x model.

if you are exporting an .x model from a .3ds one make sure you did not ommit to export textures (happens sometimes!)

see, i'm using blender and what i do is make the model, texture it, and export it as a .x or .3ds file when i like the way it looks. but when i try to get it to appear in the 3d space, only the model appears and no texture. Both the model and texture files are in the same folder.

it makes me angry :S

I use blender to. All you have to do is open the direct x file with notepad. Scroll down until you see this


make sure that texture file name is right. if youe export from blender it will be wrong. just correct it and hit save.
Then it will load textures

If the textures are referenced in 3DS Max, then you'll need to include the texture files in the same path as said by bjadams.

And CAJUN57, you're a genius! I was having issues with blender exporting, but you fixed my problem. Thanks.

Huh, it doesn't work with mine, because it doesn't even have textureFileName!!!! Where should I add it?

You have to open it with notepad, and it has to be in .X format. Try using the find function: CTRL-F(if you haven't already).

Yeah, I already used CTRL-F, nothing showed up. Where can I put the code? Where is it in a model that works?

It depends on how big the file is. For me, it was at the end of the file.

Take a look at the attachment. It's a treasure chest in .X format. Unzip it and go to the models folder, right click the file in there, and hover over "Open With..." and click Notepad. Then press CTRL F and search for "TextureFileName" (no quotes). It's at the end of the file.

most probably you have to select "EXPORT TEXTURE" in Blender .X export

yeah, there is no choice for exporting textures. What do I do now?
