You still would have to ask permission first.

I am Jacks complete lack of surprise.

Use a Metallica song if you really want to find out...
They will sue you (they like suing their own fans...).
If it's your song do what you want to with it.
If it belongs to someone else you need their permission to use it.Songs are media as well and have licenses that must be followed so you need to check the license of any media before you use it.
...except what you make. You can do whatever you want to with that.

It is not legal under any condition to use songs from other artists. I work in the music industry and have used bands in some of my games but got permission from the band and labels. It is not an easy thing to get OK'ed so be very careful. Most labels will not allow it. The best chance you have is if the Artist's OWN their music and are allowed to do what they want with it. Most of the time the Label owns the music and that will than be an issue. Hope this helps.

Yeah, how dare they sue people for illegally sharing their songs.

If it is a small time band, if you ask permission they will probably let you as it gets them attention but if you were to take Metallica(oh God ) for example then they normanly have trigger happy lawyers who will do anything to get as most money from you as humanly possible,

There's nothing they can do if you ask them before you put it in your game. Ask them, they will reply. Base your actions on their reply.

an excellent solution is to find talented indie song writers, and A LOT of them. Although some of us wouldn't mind a trip to Nashville, USA, the rest would like to go to a free music writing and sharing community, like http://www.splicemusic.com/home/ <<< That one.

Trying to learn.

and don't forget to ask their permission! and add them in your credits.
