Has anyone attempted a game designed around a server/client model where during single player both server program *and* client program are required running on the same machine .... server runs the game world/computer controlled animates etc and client does player/visual side.

Hexen & Hexen II (certainly Hexen but i think II used the same model) ran on this idea

I am interested in any reported performace issues / difficulties that might have been encountered (and successes of course)
