I thought I read somewhere that one segment was the equivalent of 8 feet in the real world. Did I just make that up, or is it true? I couldn't find the thread that I "thought" said this.

EDIT: Oops, thought I was posting this in the Models area.

I have posted that in my estimations, One segments at 100x100 is approximately 8' x 8'. The reasoning is that 100x100 is using generic units (default) in 3ds Max at 1 Unit = 1 Inch. Therefore 100 inches x 100 inches is slightly over 8 feet x 8 feet. The theory holds true in all of my modeling for FPSC.

Of course, scale is relative.

I wonder if walking and running steps hold up to that as well?
I suppose I could make a long strip and time a run to see if we have Usain Bolt speed by default, or if we have Shaqille O'Neil speed.

Sure you could try that. However you can also approximate the size using a character from one of the model packs. For instance, the SWAT character imported to 3dsMax is 70 units (inches) tall. Place him next to the wall at 100 inches in height and it looks right.

but remember that the characters are all scaled down in their .fpe files to 80% of their initial mesh size....which looks strange imho.
I tend to scale them to 90% because it looks more natural to me...
Also look at some doors that are almost one segment high, which is a bit overstretched...So scale is not as fixed as it may seem at first glance.

I am Jacks complete lack of surprise.

Yes that's true. However, all things being equal, if you consider 1 Unit = 1 inch, the default segment size and the default Character size (unscaled) works out.

Of course, you can call the scale whatever you want since it's relative. I always scale my characters back up to 100% so their on-screen scale against other objects looks correct.
