I have been using blender for a while now, and I have been exporting .x files and using them in games.

I made a helicopter for a game, and when I exported it, it wouldn't open in directX viewer. I tried to find what was wrong, and I couldn't.

I sent it to my friend to see if he could export it. He could and it worked. He sent back the .x file to make sure my direct X reader worked. I could view that file.

I don't know why blender won't let me export it. Has anyone else had this problem?

Is it possible that something is missing? Also, this has been working fine for a while, I have been able to export a direct X file this morning, but now it won't work.

Thanks.

Supposedly you can't export a file twice in the same session.
AKA, if you open up your model, and export it with the right settings, it should work, but if you change something and export again without closing blender it won't work, you have to save-quit-open your file again.

Kinda sucky but hey at least it works

Is your object centered on the origin(at location 0,0,0), with scale (1,1,1) and rotation (0,0,0)? Also make sure there aren't any objects with weird symbols in the name, directx doesn't like "Cube.001", it would rather have "Cube001". Also a random note which is fairly unlikely, I found out that there are certain words that you can't use for vertex groups and things like that, because they are keywords in the directx language. I made a bow that had a vertex group "string" which broke the model because String is a keyword.

It helps to delete any objects that you aren't trying to export as well, and unless you are exporting animation, I would do Export Selected. By the way, a lot of times models don't open in direct x viewer, or they look funky, but they still work in dark basic pro.

It isn't any of that, because a friend of mine can export the same model without any problem...

Did you update python or change any preferences or anything in your copy of Blender? You could try installing a fresh copy of it.

So it must be something to do with that model in particular, make sure you didn't change anything in it. You could also post it here for me to look at if you're willing

You don't need to restart blender to export another file.

Is your model animated?

Make sure, when you export the file, that ONLY the model is selected, and not any lights or cameras. They will break it. Select only the model and use the "Export Selected" option.

Well, it isn't that good, so I don't think you will use it, but what the heck, i'll post it.

Works fine for me, just selected it an exported. Nothing else was done to the model.

It's your install of Blender I'd say. Something has got broke along the way.

I thought of this, and this seems like a good answer, right?

Well, I tried exporting a different model, it worked.

Lewl. Might have a corrupted save file? I dunno. Save it as a different name maybe?

@Hookkshot: Choose "Flip normals" in the export options.
Or just flip the normals manually in Blender..either way. Just if you do it in the exporter it won't look wrong in Blender.

@Programming Maniac: That is rather odd indeed, I could export it fine with no animation, but with animation it fails to load.

Not sure what else to tell you but maybe to just re-make the model, which, by the way, seems insanely high poly for such a simple shape. Why so many subdivisions on a flat surface?

Yeah, it is a little high poly, but it isn't done yet, I am going to add stuff to it soon like guns and things, so it had to have a couple of subdivisions.

I've been trying to export a really simple animated cube from blender to .x and can't seem to make it work.

In the attached file, I select export to .x and then hit the anim button and the y axis up button. The resulting .x file is in the correct pose, but is not animated.

If anyone can figure out what I'm doing wrong, I would appreciate it very much! Thanks!
