I decided to write a new song yesterday and have been pretty occupied with it most of the day - for some strange reason I felt that I needed to complete it today, or else it would be likely to end up on top of my pile of unfinished songs. Therefore, the setting might not sound optimal - I haven't done the final arrangement yet, but I thought I should post it anyways.

As you might hear, this song shares theme with another one (Pure Heart) I posted here some month ago.

This is sort of a hint at you gamemakers out there (yeah, I'm one too, but my current game only uses silly sounding music, and I wan't to write something "real" too ) - I could be interrested in writing the soundtrack for a (serious) game project. That is the whole packet, not just some single song - thus giving me the option to have some themes that goes throughout the soundtrack.
It also gives one a better feel of the project to work on a bigger picture for a specific purpose rather than just hurling out something "good-for-most-situations".

I will make a thread in the DBPro forum for this, because frankly, only musicians seems to hang out in this section (and you are probably all fine with writing your own music).

So here, I guess I'm most posting for some feedback
(Let's hope Virtual Nomad won't be the only commenter this time *hint, hint* )

Wow!

I wish I was as talented. But I guess it comes with experience. I have just 3 years of self-tought experience with music.

This message was brought to you by Grandma industries.

Thanks.

I'm mostly self-taught myself.

Not perfect, huh?
Well, I think I can live with that

For the composing I use Sibelius and my good old XP-10 synthesizer.
The sampler I use is Kontakt3 and most of the samples in this piece are from the Vienna Symphonic Library. Really great quality for orchestral compositions

Just to clarify, since I saw someone use the term "sample" for prerecorded loops, that is not what I'm pointing to here - a sample is a recording of a certain tone of a certain instrument with a certain articulation, used together to create realistic playback.

That's really good, well done.

Reminds me of something from say "heros of Might & Magic" series of games.... not sure if your familiar with them, but it would fit right in...

Thanks, no I'm not all that familiar with it, allthough I've had a close encounter with it sometime a long time ago I think.

Note to all: I just noticed that the timpani roll at the beginning doesn't do the crescendo that was meant in this recording.
Oh well, I guess you could just imagine it...

I was going to write "Thanks" to Indie, but the board system won't let me, since apparently I've posted "exactly that message" in this thread already.
So, now that there's some more text to it, thanks

If Sibelius has envelopes, you could use them to make the crescendos. That's how I do it in Sonar Producer.

Try things that you normally wouldn't... you might find the answer.

Actually, Sibelius is just for notation and works by sending a midi stream to Kontakt, which is responsible for the sounds.
It's very simple to make a crescendo / diminuendo effect using these two programs; it's just a matter of inserting a raising / sinking set of controller messages (either controller 7 for channel volume, or 1 which is used by most VSL patches to control the hardness of the sound) to simulate such effects.
I just forgot to add it in before recording this.

Yeah... That's what envelopes do. I can also control the equalization and Vst effects with envelopes. It works really good with sustained notes on strings and brass. I just draw with my mouse where I want the increases. Doing it this way not only changes the volume for the crescendo but also the timbre. So you go from soft and quiet to hard and loud. It makes things sound more alive.

I think I'll make some tutorials and sound examples to show ya what I mean.

Oh, I see. I thought you meant like the release envelope (which is of course set in the sampler)

Well, basically I can do that stuff with Sibelius too, using control messages.
To get an evenly raising effect, I'd have to admit it's not as easy as dragging a line with the mouse, but some minor modifications to the hairpin playback plugin makes this sort of things rather easy still
