I see several on ebay. From version 7 up to CS3 Extended.

I can't really spend a lot at the moment, I'm already behind schedule and over budget. So would version 7 be a good choice?

I know this is not answering your question but you could try Gimp, it's free and although it's not as good as Photoshop I think it's close if you take price into account

Or if you have the money I would say go for PS CS, as it shouldn't be that pricey at the moment.

I personally prefer 7.0, it makes me feel a bit smarter than CS3 does. CS3 just makes me feel stupid...

I have every version from 4.0 to CS3 extended.

If you can do any models for FW, reply to the FleetWars thread.

The reason I suggest CS3 is that it is the first version to be able to edit textures directly on a 3D model. In CS3, you can open 3D model files (That are already textured) and the edit the textutre directly ON the model. I LOVE that.

It's probably a moot point anyway. I'm probably going to have to hire someone to do most of the artwork for the game anyway.

Since when? You have the ability to render 3D models in the form of 3D layers, you have the ability to paint textures(obviously), but you can't paint onto any 3D models and have the model's texture change, without a 3rd party plugin at least.

... and you can't in CS4 either!

In CS4 the 3D manipulation commands have moved onto the toolbar but they don't include a 'paint directly on a 3D model' button.

I tested it and no you can't paint directly onto the model but you can link the material so that when you change it in the material psd it changes in the 3d model psd(If you understand) looks cool but I won't use it.

I personally think that CS2 is the best for the money. You can get it very cheap now.

Ive got to say to be fair (if you really are short of money),
Only get software that will be at a similar level to your ability, what im saying is dont go buying PS CS3 if youve only just started texturing, start with GIMP. Then as you need software that has more features get PS Elements then once you need more features and your skill is limited by the software THEN buy PS CS3.

I have a fully legal version of PS Elements that I would be happy to send to you for a small amount.

Hope this helps,

If you're a student, there is an educational version which is for commercial or non commercial use as long as you're a student...I think.

I'm pretty sure those versions are only for school use, they are meant for students to be able to do the assignments and extra-credit work at home when they are away from the school computers.

edit: must pay attention to post dates.

just go with 7 if you don't know what to do and CS3 if you know how to use photoshop, but what ever you do DO NOT and I REPEAT NEVER USE GIMP!

Bah, just ignore 3D Ninja's anti-gimp propaganda. Gimp is fine. It's been far more than just helpful for me.

If you are new to Photoshop I would suggest you get Photoshop elements or paint shop pro, both are very cheap in comparison and have a lot of the same features.

CS4 is looking mighty fine and is planned for release in December although I doubt it will make it with the current amount of bugs in it.
However, around the same time as CS4 is released Adobe are planning on releasing Photoshop Express. It's an online version of Photoshop that needs no install because the work is carried out server-side. I don't know how that will work out because I'm not on the Express team but the idea of it is fabulous!

@ I want to game,

I have used Paint Shop Pro for a very long time. I currently have version 7. I might even have version 9 in a box around here somewhere. But I didn't see a lot of the features that allow people to produce some of the spectacular effects I've seen come from Photoshop. (or maybe they just have a better texture library than me..)

I'll look again at Paint Shop Pro 9 and see what it has. That might be just the thing I need.

Remember those old guys? Like, those guys that used to make all those awesome renders and detail, I think one of them was called DaVinci, and all they used was MS Paint. Sometimes it's just skill....

hmm... I shall sig this...

I suggest CS2 over CS3 actually. CS3 has had a huge increase in memory requirements I've noticed. And I don't like how CS3 changed the way you link layers, it makes me do an extra click that was not needed before. Unless CS3 does something specific that you need, save the money (and memory) and get CS2.
