It's coming, yessir, it's coming! Hope you haven't forgotten me!

It's been a while.I've been away for a long time, working on the movies Urban Savages and Death Reveals.
I only now had the time to work on this and I have some good news; I have the first six levels, the demo/episode 1, whichever you want to call it, ready for build, and I finished editing the fmv sequences for the game.
Meaning, that if everything goes right, I'll have the demo online within a few days.

As an appetizer, here's a few pics from the cutscenes.

I want to take you up and get back to working on this Ehetyz.
I'm dropping Dusk in the trash been until I get some more
experience and planning.

Will you accept? I'm planning to work full force this time and I've
also got some surprises and ideas to suggest. Of coarse, your will
comes first.

That's a tempting offer, Astek... I'll have to think about that, depends on how much time I can dedicate to the game in the immediate future, gotta find that out first...

Going to build a beta .exe now, wish me luck

Probably in every single other FPSC game, it's a stock light.

Got the game built surprisingly without crashes, but there's still a few little things I have to do... (like pasting some missing textures to the game folder )

The best think about your games IMO is the cut scenes. I mean, they are probably the best fpsc games but the cut scenes just make it so much more enjoyable.

Thanks, I'll take that as a compliment

I have the beta version of the demo/episode one (haven't decided what to call it) online now. Before I make the game public/release the final build, I need some beta testers.

So, anyone who's interested in trying it out, hit me a mail at ehetyz(at)gmail.com to receive the beta version download link.

I got your email Esa. I'm going to check that out right now.
I do, although, have something to confront you about.
With the moderators transferring the showcase section to this, and
most likely deleting locked threads, one of your threads was deleted
that had to do with one of your games. It was the one that you built
with the underground shrine area and the cutscenes were pretty gory.
The name of the game has left me... but I went to search for it in
your showcase posts just to find out if no longer exists.

Will you consider re-uploading or starting a mock thread to re-release
it? It was to be considered you first released mini-game. Plus, I
thought it was very creepy and excellent work.

(Throwing bricks might be a good hint if you're lost.)

Oh, Decay... That's a coincidence, I just deleted it from my server to make space for HCZ
Sure, I could re-upload and make a new thread, though I'm not sure if I have enough space on my own server right now...

(Though now that I think of it, I'm pretty sure I never made a showcase of it here, only in IGD)

Edit: And if you thought Decay was gory, wait 'till you see the opening cinematic of HCZ

I just finished it and man was I surprised myself.
It really got me when my name ended up in the credits.
Also, you mentioned that next location... as in the level I was
working on.... I'm going to be sure to jump on that one then...
along with the catacombs. Only thing is though, I lost DarkFact's
debris pack and he doesn't have it for download anymore.

Anyways, I can try to do what I was doing before but try and make
the "secret building structure" bigger and seem more like one.
I'll give it back rooms and such
(kind of like F.E.A.R Extraction Points).

Anyways, around the beginning of the power plant level, the shaders
messed up horribly. I think if I built the game (like we planned)
it could potentially be faster in FPS and also have less shader
issues. Glad to see you back!

Ok, I got a friend of mine reporting the same anomaly. I'm guessing it's caused by FPSC failing to include some file in the build. Now I just gotta find it.

AaronG; Which level are you in?

Parts of the opening cutscene are footage I shot about a year ago with a Canon XM2 and some piece of crap 3CCD Panasonic. The stuff with the main character (last part of the intro and the whole outro) I shot on 25p HDV with a Canon HV30. (I really love Canon cameras )

I'm in the first level, that room which needs a key, I got in, and pressed enter and it just says something dealing with tears falling from your face because you remember what you did, while staring at the bed. And, the game just drew a blank to me.

Ah nice, I've used the Flip MinoHD and the quality is amazing, I need to actually purchase one.

Keep up the great work!

Wow! This was very well done! Other than a few laggy spots and minor bugs, I loved it! I agree with darimc when he says that the live cutscenes really bring out the game. The first one was, well... shocking

I think it is BOTB quality! Keep it up!

Alright, it's public now, though here on WIP only, for now. I won't make a showcase topic yet, just in case there comes a need to make a new build of the game. Nevertheless, here it is.

http://trproductions.net/ehetyz/HCZepisode1.rar

It's built with shaders on and has a lot of detail, so it requires a decent system. I'd say the equivalent of my comp is the absolute minimum. So, at least 1,8ghz, 256mb GPU and at least 1-2gb ram.

When playing, keep in mind;

-HCZ has an adventure game-styled point and click mechanic. You can activate various objects such as closets, dead bodies, books etc by pressing enter near them. I suggest taking advantage of this, as it gives you gameplay tips, deepens the storyline, and you can occasionally find ammo clips etc. from closets and boxes.
-The game is pretty dark, I'd suggest playing in a darkened room... In daylight it might be a bit difficult to see what's going on.
-Always aim for the head, shooting elsewhere is useless
-The axe is wildly inaccurate, use it as your last resort

Oh, and The game contains some strong language, disturbing images, adult themes, and strong violence and gore. It's not recommended for children or for the faint of the heart. If in doubt, do not download
(And don't come whining to me if it makes you lose your appetite )

I forgot to add the readme into the .rar file... I'll upload it if necessary.

Thanks

Been watching a whole lot of zombie movies, I'm a zombie movie fanatic after all (I have a DVD collection of about 1200 movies, probably 200 zombie films there )

It's pretty big because of the fmv, which takes about 100 megs alone, and the sounds and music, which there is a lot of.

Ok played it. And I have to say... Frickin' brilliant! Easily the best FPSC game I've played. Anyway, here's the review:

Graphics and environment:

Just amazing! It's incredible how much detail you can put into one single room! I especially liked the outdoor scenes, like that playground scene, that was absolutely fabulous! The environment was very atmospheric and well planned. Only thing I didn't like was the power plant's courtyard. That big tube or something like that looked pretty bad. Mainly because it was stock and looked a bit out of place.

The shaders on the guns were really nice! I'm not sure were they custom shaders or stock but they still looked great.

Overall the graphics were absolutely fantastic! I really liked the detail on levels and the shaders.

Gameplay

I liked your idea of one-hit-kills and zombies only die on headshot. This idea was great in theory, but practically it was just shooting zombies in the head and avoiding them to get too close to you. This doesn't actually bother me but you could at least make some other kind of monsters which have different weak-spots.

The game wasn't very hard, but the jumping-puzzles gave some nice variation to that headshotting. Kudos to that! You also gave a good amount of ammo: Not too much and not too little.

Horror and sounds

It was really spooky and I even jumped at some points! You really are a some kind of master of horror. The sound effects and music were absolutely amazing! I want to know what program you or your helpers used to make those sounds and musics (I bet it was Reason..?)

Framerate bugs and such

The framerate was a good 35-38 on my rig all the time. The only time it went below 30 was that powerplant court yard. I bet it's because it was pretty large outdoor area.

Some bugs:

- I couldn't hear some of the floor sounds in the sewer area.
- You must get out of the trigger zone to watch the picture again (I doubt you can even fix that but just saying)
- For some reason I couldn't see the cut scenes. Shame. I think they would have been really cool.

Here's all I found.

Overall

It was absolutely brilliant! I think I've made the superlative record on this forum by my review but heck, you deserve it! I died in the powerplant level and had to start all over and heck, I didn't give up like in most games I would have. This tells something about the greatness of HCZ.

There's so little to complain here that.. I have to do this..

10/10

Thanks for the super(lative) review Juzi

On the bugs... I think the cutscenes not playing might be a driver/codec problem. They are in the video bank as MPEG files, so you should be able to watch them with WMP as well.
The trigger zone thingie... yeah, at least with my very modest scripting knowledge it's impossible to alter, it was the only way to make them repeatable at all that I could think of.
I guess the footstep sound is tied to the segment... not sure how to fix that

As for sounds, I myself use Audacity and Ulead Mediastudio pro 8.0 (which I use for HDV editing as well)... Jesper Ahl also uses Audacity, not sure about Jussi Huhtala, he uses some expensive professional programs I think... He's a pretty awesome composer, he's done a lot of music for Finnish independent movies, including some of mine.

I'm planning on some different tactics with the zombies for later levels... I think I'll stick with the headshots, but I have a few other ideas on how to spice up the combat (and make it scarier
)

Sounds nice! Well.. Reason is kinda expensive software so I guess he's using it.

OK. I'll check the videos.

EDIT: Ok watched the videos. Very nice gore effects you got there! What I liked even more was the music. It was.. beautiful. I think you have a new fan here . I'm really interested on how the story continues. Please, PLEASE say you are releasing this game for free.

Could be Soundwork is overall something I usually leave to people more talented than me, so I haven't really gotten familiar with the programs on that field... Though I did have fun filtering and working on the sounds in HCZ, in movies it's often a thousand times more painful (Remembers filtering out background noise from PQ movie, giving up and re-recording 40 minutes of dialogue, shudders)

Downloading the demo now, I am very excited to play this. The whole point n' click (or press) thing sounds very interesting, I like games that reveal more by exploring.

I played as much of the demo as I could, although unfortunately it caused my PC to lock up when I opened the first door of the second level, but my specs are low, and thats not something you could have helped.

The environments were especially well done, nice amount of detail and very realistic too My only criticism here is that it was too dark, made it hard to navigate and see doors. Playing in the dark helped a little but I still didn't feel it was sufficient enough.

Personally loved the object interaction thing, I've been tempted to try that myself in FPSC since I'm a big fan of Dino Crisis, and it was a similar style interaction.

Despite the lag I experienced, I have to commend you on it being pretty steady, the frame rate was low but not fluctuating!

The movies were some tasty icing on this zombie cake, some fantastic gore effects you have there. The sound effects also kept the atmosphere tense, although they died out after a while, I'd have liked them to keep going for the atmosphere.

Top work, keep it up!

Thanks for the comments y'all

@Juzi
Of course I'm releasing the game for free. Not sure if I'm going to release it in one big chunk, or in 6-8 level episodes, though.

About the music... Yeah... The outro music, "Loss of life" was something Jesper Ahl made just for fun, and when I heard it, I just immediately went "Ok, I want this song, this song's perfect for my game".

@Paul112
I noticed the entrance to butcher shop in level 2 is kind of a heavy/laggy spot... Probably portal-related, it made the frame rate drop about 5fps on my comp as well...

And I'm most happy the gore effects were satisfying They were all made by me and my friend/fellow moviemaker Artturi Rostén (Who also did all the zombie voices for the game).

That, was sweet. That was the best game made with FPSC.
You seriously need to get this published and make a boxed version. You would have my money.

A few things:

The MP5 had a crosshair.
Some of the locked doors closed as soon I opened them.
In level 5 if you get on the roof you could see no ground.
In level 6 at the sweet last room a zombie walked through the door and some got stuck.
And zomlevel5PDA1 has a spelling mistake in everybody.

Also, is Parasite Quarantine out yet?

Overall everything was great and I need to play the rest.

Thanks for the comments

I can't believe I missed the crosshair on the MP5... It's an easy one to fix, I think I'll have to re-upload later today with the fixes... I'm not sure I can affect the locked doors, they're stock scripts... As well as the zombies getting stuck, the AI does that sometimes, I'm not sure there's much I can do about it.

As for PQ, do you mean the movie or the game?
