Not bad, did you just join up the vertices or model it as one? I did my first ref image one of a pistol recently also,

/Hi-5

Not bad, texture needs work, move it around a bit and fiddle with the UV's

I modeled this as CSG—except for the barrel, magazine, trigger and the cocking-motion-thingy which are modified primitives. The reason I made this is because I was disgusted by a video I was watching of a guy making a gun for Halo CE in 3DS Max and doing a terrible job.

WOW, that is the exact same gun I made. I almost thought you stole it from me, until I realized that yours was a little better.

It is the first result when googling for "shotgun"

I'm remaking this at a higher level of detail, and hoping that I won't even need a texture this time.

Just be careful that you don't go too detailed with the geometry. The best models for games have the most detail with the best texture and the lowest polycount

I haven't got any engine to put it in, so I'm not worried about constraints. Besides, with today's hardware I'm sure if only the player's weapon has the level of detail that it will take me to make this, it wouldn't really hurt the framerate

Well, I tried this out as i've only modeled a gun by a reference image ounce, and failed, so I decided to see how good I do. I'm actually impressed with my results

Heres the render

And a screenie in edit mode

BTW how did you UV map the texture so good? I know the basics, but all I can UV map is simple shapes. This I don't get.

First of all, it looks pretty good, but you could be using your polygons elsewhere to give the main portion some depth, because right now it looks a bit like a fat piece of cake cut to shape with a knife.

however, it's just a general rule of teh internets not to display your own work in another person's thread; this kind of inadvertent spotlight-takeover is called thread hijacking. >.>

My point is that your model there has well over enough potential for its own thread (I've seen threads for much worse )—not to mention that you would have everyone commenting on only your work, so you can get more tips on how to improve your model and future work.

I didn't Since I made sure that the geometry matched up as good as possible with the picture I just projected the texture on the YZ plane; the edges of the model have stretched pixels all across them. You just can't see it in that picture... >.> As for the barrel, magazine, trigger and cocky-thing, they either had enough geometrical detail to go with only a shiny gun-metal material, or weren't important enough for having any texturing detail on them. The handle and chamber (which are CSG) are the only parts of the shotgun that actually have a texture on them.

Sorry about that, I'll work on it some more and make a thread for it soon.

Thanks for the info! I was wondering how it looked so good
