Key:
VG = Video Game
VGM = Video Game Music
/ = or

Further Notes:
-Also, when making music for game backround tunes it is a must to have seamless loops so the players do not notice when the loop happens. Most music will work with 45-60 second loops with minor changes throughout the loop. So one trick is to have the last 10 seconds or so of the loop be very similar to the first part of it. When they match together you will have an endless loop... -Indie PC Games

-On the bgs (background sound) however, that is usually up to the gamemaker; depending on what scene the music might be used in, different sound effects might be desired, and hence "locking" the score to some specific ones might not be too good.
However, certain effects can definitively strenghten the feel of the song, as you said. -Rudolpho

If anybody has any suggestions on making it better, just give me a post

Well, thank you for the list. I am uncertain whether many people will actually think about "going by the standards" when it comes to writing a song, but if not more, theese settings can at least give some inspiration and a starting point if you're up for composing some bgm.

It seems that you've put some efforts into this, so I must say no theremin?!

Hehe, anyways, I think that you should really add the flute and the oboe as "sad" instruments in this list

Dan that is said very well. I have never posted in the music and sound effects community yet but would love to be a part of it as I am in a studio every day and would love to help the community out.

I think you can add effects to this list as many games not only have these intraments playing in the backrounds, if you listen close, 50% will have a good looping sound effect behind the music. Can't forget about the non Acoustic Guitar along with standard drumming. A God Smack type of song is great for some action adventure games as it get you moving if you know what I mean.

Again great list and I will look at it again and make further comments.

@Indie: That is some good additions you come with.
On the bgs (background sound) however, that is usually up to the gamemaker; depending on what scene the music might be used in, different sound effects might be desired, and hence "locking" the score to some specific ones might not be too good.

I couldn't agree with you more. Depending on the scene of the game, the music and effects will change and will come and go... Will all depend on the gamemaker for sure. What you can do with misc and games is endless...

All good and glad to be apart of the music and sound effects in these forums. I am new here but think I can help a bunch in the music field since I am in a studio a few times a week.

Thank man. Not sure why I missed this board but I have a bunch of stuff I can share with the community for sure. Great Track you posted that I commented on before. That is some good work...

@da power pwnerer

Nice.... You made a nice list... Just trying to add my 2 cents... Hope it helps. I have been to many studio's before and watched a bunch of people do there work so I have learned to shut up and listen and you can learn a bunch of stuff. Love this board and again can't believe I missed it...

All good.

Welcome to the team! We sure could need someone who knows what they're talking about. I know I don't. I never know what I'm talking about, but that hasn't stopped me yet.

I'm the local oddity, BTW.

Edit: Why, hello there, Sep.

Seppuku is competing to earn the local oddity title, but he still has some training to do. His midi-chlorians are off the scale though. Great potential.

Probably worth a sticky I think, it's useful information.

Hmmm... Maybe adding some websites on music theory and such can help a great deal...

If you know of any, give me a post
