Ok, so lets say that theoretically, I re-created the first level of the DOOM Freeware edition in FPSC. If I released it here (for free), would i be able to get in any trouble from id? Probably a stupid question, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Nope, just look around at all the full fan made doom games, you are free to do this for personal use with no limitations besides copyright issues, and you ARE allowed to give it away for free, but you need to make sure you make it clear that it is FAN MADE!!!
Not sure about commercial if its all fpsc media though...
