i have a very stupid question, so let the flames begin..

how exactly do you use the 'function' button on the right, looks like it tracks them for you but i cannot figure out how.

Once you create a function they will appear in the panel. To go to a function double click on the appropriate function in the panel. It is a quick way to jump around in your code. It is also one of the reasons try not to use subsroutines.
