July 20th 2008

First versions must be submitted by 20th July with your details of how you plan to develop the final version. NVIDIA will feedback to you at this stage to provide positive direction. At this point in time, NVIDIA may potentially include some or all demos on the July driver update which will be available to 100’s of millions of users.

Top two Preview versions each win a 9800GTX

Read and re-read the competition judging criteria carefully to make sure you tick all the boxes when submitting your preview version.

Remember to rename your .ZIP file ._ZIP before sending your entry to [email protected] otherwise the file will be rejected by our Google mail server.

We look forward to reviewing your preview entries!!

If they are not sent in are we still able to participate?

My project is not polished yet as i have no skybox, villages are not random generated yet and physics is not in yet...

Dared1111 If you are making an Uber demo, you have until the 31st to submit a preview.

I think you have to submit a preview in order to continue.

You can still make entries for the feature demo categories or the uber demo, but you will have missed the opportunity to get valuable feedback from TGC and NVIDIA on your progress, and you will have missed your chance to win one of two 9800 GTX cards. We will announce the results of the first deadline final entries soon. Until then, good luck and carry on banging those physics demos into shape!

How have the Über entrants missed anything? As stated by the details section of the compo subdomain, we still have until the 31st of July to submit our preview versions as written here:

Quote: "July 31st 2008

All entries must be submitted in their preview development state along with plans for final versions. TGC and NVIDIA will rate and provide feedback."

Thus I fail to see how we could have missed anything as the preview(it clearly says preview state there) submission deadline has not yet been reached. In addition, this topic title mentioned Feature Demos only(which does not contain the Über category), and your mention of "Top two Preview versions each win a 9800GTX" doesn't indicate the exclusion of Über entries, so what's going on? Feature entries have to do less, and get more prizes?

[Edit] Or by "and you will have missed your chance to win one of two 9800 GTX cards" do you mean the Über preview has the other opportunity?

Dark Coder it says this though also:

I was in such a rush to try and get some more cloth examples in my demo I had to stop and take it out and send an old version of my demo in, I forgot to even write about what I plan to do to take it further

Indeed, but this is said under the Category A section(feature demos), it's even written twice there but the Über category says 31st only, so it's not fair if we have missed the preview deadline, since when does reading compo rules entail guessing what the organizers meant to write?

@ Lee: I was surprised that you now say "You can still make entries for the feature demo categories or the uber demo, but you will have missed the opportunity to get valuable feedback from TGC and NVIDIA on your progress, and you will have missed your chance to win one of two 9800 GTX cards."!
When the rules said "First versions must be submitted by 20th July with your details of how you plan to develop the final version."! This in mind I was guessing that only demos (feature-demos) are accepted that were submitted till this date (also for the über-demos it would be that 31st July) and any later submissions have no chance at all in the comp.!

That's why I sent you an e-mail regarding my entry-submission, but got no response yet! So I have no idea, if my submission is in or not!)

Also I was a bit worried about the file size (the table in the rules say: "Max Zipped Size: 5 Megs", but on the same page also: "5 Meg size does not include the DBPro runtime DLLs. The 5MB limit excludes the size of the main executable, so for example if your demo is 4.5MB in media and a 7MB Dark Basic Pro executable, it will not be rejected."!
So what does this mean actually?
Zipped = 5 MB-size OR
Media only 5 MB max, but Exe, source-code, Author.txt etc. is uninteresting at all -> zipped maybe over 5 MB-size?
Or is the combination of both possible?: sending only the media with 5 MB max zipped-size AND separately the Exe, Source-Code and Author.txt zipped in an extra file/e-mail?

I ask this, cause my car-model itself is over 5.7 MB in size! (A reduced size of 1.7 MB, but this data-optimized version during export into X-file-format has graphical-glitches-> ugly to look at!)
If the "zipped-size" is relevant then my size is OK, otherwise I'm out of the feature-category!

Exactly my thoughts. If this is the case, the beta dates are completely meaningless especially for the über demo participants, which don't even get any prize for their betas.

I believe that's the case.

You are right, the preview deadline for the UBER entries is the end of July. Sorry if I confused anyone, I was referring to the feature demo beta deadline only (20th July), and that all feature demo betas submitted will be reviewed and any feature demos that are submitted between now and the final deadline will not get this review. The top two beta prizes only apply to the feature demo betas, not the UBER demo. The UBER demo betas preview is 31st July.

The 5MB limit is on all the uncompressed media your demo uses. We will not count the EXE size, just the uncompressed size of your media files.

Hoozer : Your car model pushed the uncompressed size of your media to 6.5MB which puts it over the maximum size allowed. You should look to reduce the size of this media file to get within the limits for this demo competition.

If you have any other questions, do not hesitate to ask them here. Good luck with your demos! We will be feeding back to all those who got their feature demo betas in on time shortly.

Those of your working on UBER demos, your deadline for getting your betas in is 31st July, so you have time to cram your creations with soft bodies, fluids, cloth and force fields! My advice is to add them all, and really push any GPUs that may be running your demo

@ Lee: Solved my "size"-problem as mentioned in my e-mail! You really gave some relief to my nerves, now I can sleep again without worrying about my entry! Thanks a lot!
Now I have 1.14 MBs total "Media"-folder-size after re-exporting my models with the "Binary with compression"- instead of "Text"-method, so my "final"-entry should have no such "rule"-violations any more!

@ All: Good luck to us all! I'm looking forward to seeing all the submissions in action!

@Lee: I've sent you an email regarding my missing entries (Cloth and Fluids). I'm posting here just to check, as I haven't received any reply.

Is this the same as the feature demo betas, we dont HAVE to send anyhing in, in order to continue to the final?

Correct, you do not HAVE to send anything in for the deadline but you will not benefit from feedback by NVIDIA and TGC, who are ultimately going to judge the entries and choose winners. Getting your entries in before the deadline is a vital advantage if you want to win.
