BOXY!: CHRONICLES OF THE CRATE - Development HQ

I have finally produced something "decent" while working on one of my side projects. I call it "Boxy!"

Latest Demo: http://rapidshare.com/files/133684351/Boxycratechronicles.rar.htm

The aim of the game is to get to the end of the level. Sounds simple but from start to finish there are endless amounts of impossible tasks guaranteed to keep you trying again and again, and again... and again.

Here is a demo of one of the easyer levels within the game, the levels are small, colourful and interesting - and 100% lag free! The game ran about 300+fps with full shader effects, dynamic lights, full lightmapping and high textures. The demo contains soft lightmaps, no shader effects and high textures, so if your having trouble running other fpsc games, this is the one for you.

When i was looking for inspiration i found this game my Dad used to play, you had to push the boxes in the holes and you had a limited number of boxes, so if you got one stuck up against a wall for instance, then you would have to start again. it was very addicting and nothing like it has been done in 3D.

The demo is almost fully ironed out, however i have put up support bars to stop you jumping over the ditches. This is only temporary untill i get a no-jump script and crates that fit perfectly into the slots. This is the simplest level, and others include dropping explosives, creatures that destroy your boxes, falling roof/floor traps and alot more. You could spend a good hour trying to complete this and its only 22mb so download now!

I want you all to be annoyingly critical when it comes to reviewing the game :/ i want to make it the best it can be. The full version will be released soon, for free. Here is a strategy guide if you cant complete the level, however dont post a review etc. if you have not actually tried the game without the strategy guide because it makes it boring and bland. Atleast give it a few tries first. Oh and it may be possible to cheat the jumps - please do not do this, it spoils the challenge.

(Screenclip: Box deployment - level 1)

Strategy:

Additional progress:
Custom Huds
"Deploy boxes" instead of "enter to use"
Different types of boxy
Custom Desktop icon

If i have extra time i will impliment these changes, if you guys could think of any more please suggest them, anything to make the game better.

=============================================
At the moment here are the glitches i have found so far:

*Loading screen is pixilated.

*stacking too many crates at high speeds results in falling through the map. (Fixed in v1.1)

*Boxy's fail to go through the spike gate when they are on their side. (This is a problem as 50% of them seem to deploy upturned. Plan accordingly)(Fixed in v1.1)

*Loading bar has an egypt theme, accident from one of my previous games (Fixed in v1.1)

*Spike pit #1 will only kill the player if s/he lands directly on it.

=============================================
Anyways, enjoy the game! lol.

~Tom

The tgc download thing keeps thinking my file is corrupt, i dont know if it can take rar's, so i uploaded it on megaupload/rapidshare.

Sounds awesome! I'll review this in the next Gunn3r Games Informer! If you'd like a review of the full version when it's ready, send it to me before making it published and hopefully the review and the game should come out about the same time.

If you have V1.09 or later installed, you can set the jumpheight in a trigger zone so the player doesn't jump. Ask around for specific instructions. It's probably just one line of code. As for the fitting perefctly, I can send you a box entity the right size with a basic texture supplied. Alternately, mess with the scale in the fpe.

Good idea, btw. Downloading now...

EDIT: where's the DL?

gunn3r - Ok i will send the full version along when its done ^_^

pus in boots - Thanks, yeh i made it in v1.09 but didnt realise such a thing existed after a few searches in the script forum. If you could send a box entity that would be great, i have been trying with the scale but the texture looks a bit pixilated when wrapped around it. thx ^_^

And try uploading to FileFront. It seems that the download was too big for TGC and it didn't appear correctly.

btw, I think that box is slightly heigher/lower on the vertical axis. If this causes any problems, I could re-upload a properly scaled box.

Thx ^_^ means alot : D

lol pus in boots i broke your box before i tried it in the map, lol i was messing around with that white texture, you know the jpg file, put a massive green stripe on it to see how i could edit it. - all went well. Found a beautiful crate texture, put it on but now it crashes every time i try and use it lol! i think its because i was messing with the fpe's. >_< oops

It won't run for me. It just comes up with a message saying "FPSC game has stopped working." It's probably because I change the directory from "C:/program files/Boxy!: The crate chronicles" to "C:/program files/boxy". But it wouldn't work with the original name, so I was forced to change it. I'm running it on Vista as well.

EDIT: As for YOUR problem, can I take a look at the fpe?

Haha, how did you know i was running it on vista : P

Im on 64 bit so its changed all the program files, however i have it working again. My fpe is now your origional, but at one point i changed it so it directed the texture to another box - then i striped it for no apparent reason :S

here it is in all its stripeyness

Edit: Oh about the "boxy!" I remember naming that in one of the directories then realising that it wont accept any of those nasty > < /!@ charecters etc. I will go back, fix these glitches, try to fix the tgc download and then repack it in the installer with no strange charecters. >_< will be 15 mins

When do you think you'll have the full version ready? If it's not within a couple of days, I'm going to go ahead and review the demo for you. We're planning on releasing by the 15th.

Tried uploading the fixed version, its given me that corrupt file thing on the tgc download again. will rapidshare it or something, this time it has no installer so if thats the problem it should be fixed.

Possibly will be done by then, but its a tight deadline. If i manage to get the new boxes working it may go over, i have uploaded a new demo with the glitches ironed out. Should be good for reveiwing if i cant produce a final.

people have been finding problems with the first download,

i removed the installer i think that was the problem. I have hosted a glitch free version with no installer on a different provider just to be extra sure.

I'm going to download and run it on another computer to see if thats the problem, but as far as im concirned the game will run if you download the new file. I will delete the old one if you are sure it dosn't work.

hmm, its narrowed down to a problem with rapidshare, does anyone know of a upload/download site where it would allow me to send a folder and all its contents opposed to a single file like the .rar's :/?

Edit: I am uploading a .zip using normal instead of best compression, to filefront. If this dosn't work im honestly out of ideas > :/

To me the screenshot looks like it is trying to find the files straight out of my folders on my computer, unless we share the same name. Instead of the compressed folder. It might be a vista-vista problem, is anyone else having problems who is running vista?

Heres the .zip!

Not sure what version, I'll ask later. It came up with something like "could not locate file" when I tried to extract it. I also tried running the .exe directly from the zip, but encountered similar problems. I guess we'll find out if this is Vista-related in about 5 minutes

Good news! It works fine on XP. Now I haven't completed the demo yet, but here's a couple of things that caught my attention:
1) The boxes slide around way too much
2) The stakes mess up the physics (of course you already know that) My solution for that problem would be to place an invisible (pure black) static floor-type entity just above the satkes. So the boxes land on a flat surface, but they appear to be on the stakes.

Also, you should implement a checkpoint save system into the game. Search the forum for the checkpoint save script and attach it to your desired triggerzone.

Just played the demo, it was surprisingly addicting for just one level, and I can't wait to see the full version. As Pus mentioned, the boxes slide a bit too much, but it adds to the challenge so I think it's worth keeping.
Anyhow, great work, keep it up!

At first i thourght the boxes slide around too much, but then i thourght it could work out in the end, on most of the levels the crate pits are near the deployment zone, so if your not careful they go straight in. At one point i wanted an effect where you pushed a crate, and it didnt stop sliding untill it hit an object, obviously it would never follow a 100% straight path, and diagonal sliding takes place aswell, so i chose a friction of 120 which seems to make it work ok. i found if i use any less they never stop, and anymore stops them rebounding. As much as i would like to change it i cant, as one of the levels involves sending a crate down a tube where it stops perfectly at the exit. if i changed friction values it may stop inside and it will be lost.

Yeh the stakes! Luckily the pits are deep enough to stop the crates hopping back out, but im sure its not doing the framerate any favours, i do have an invisible segment and will start to put it in in the next patch but if the player falls in by accident and lands on it, it may cause problems. I suppose i could fix that by making the whole pit a "plrdeathinzone".

I have been thinking about checkpoint saves, but if a box, for example, gets stuck in one of the box pits and the player proceeds to walk on a save trigger, they would have to restart the whole level.

Anyway, glad its working ^_^
