Hi men, i'm very bothered from people who shows their creation, you go to their site, and you need registration (developers aquiring your e-mail...)(spamming) to download a very poor game. Also you'll be lucky if the zipped file don't need password, and if you get it, is always wrong.Or the archive is unvalid.and you just downloaded a 10 MB archive...
People are very happy to distribuite programs using microsoft installer, who places everywhere icon ,link, logs, so you can delete it easier, well... it's easy do delete a folder and say "goodbye!!!", no no no, you must find as sherlock holmes all the tiny pieces of debris the program left on your pc.
Finally, yea a "good game" who nobody want to pay a cent to play it, you have to pay 5 dollars to dowload a copy and play it (maybe only one time....how about trow money out of the window),only your aunt, your father and your mother and some insane ones will download your game.
STOP IT!

lol... they're just trying to scam you from cash mate
if i can't download and try a game for free i just close the window - might be the best in the world, i don't care though... if i have to pay just to see if i like it then just ain't worth it
i don't even do that with retail games and you can take them back no quibble for 10days lol

I would be intrested to see if any shareware games make any money at all.

I have to agree that installers are a bit stupid especially when all it does is make a folder in program files and put shortcuts everywhere. Use a zip file with a folder containing all the game files. All the user has to do is extract it to the desktop and play it. When they want to get rid of it just delete the folder. Even worse is when its a demo that will only be played a couple of times and then removed.

It also has to be mentioned that $5 on a crap game is better than $60+ on a crap game.

Sony seem to churn out more rubbish titles than any of the big three in the console war. Quantity over Quality is never good

But you'll find that most of the time they don't just create a folder but instead install DLL's into the Windows system folder, edit the registry, install fonts and what-not. Especially with VB programs I can create an installer to automatically put all the OCX's into the System directory without bothering the user. Now imagine if you just extracted a game to the desktop and it had a text file in it trying to explain to you where you have to copy and paste 30-odd files just to get the game to run, wouldn't an installer be easier?

gonna be a free game, the source will be readily availble when its done for DBE & DBP

i think due to the length of time i was expecting to take developing it, would be kinda rude to charge now.

yes installer are good for installing a lot of odd files in different folder... all is automatic, yes.BUT when you unistall, most files rest in windows folders.

Stand alone program like a db game, don't need an installer!

It's like place a pot into another pot, then into another, so you can trasport it more safetly. You remeber russians doll "MATRIOSKA"??

Well, if you want to play that game, play with matrioska, not with installers.

For complicated programs with other languages they are nessasary but for a db game it justs waists time and effort.

Also if Zeldas developers caught you charging for a game with their name on it, they'd be pretty peed off. Or do you have that covered, I haven't read all of your main post ?

If the game doesn't have an excellent free demo they aren't going get much in the way of shareware sales. Even games that DO have excellent free demos rarely make a lot of money. Stick with quality places for shareware and you won't have any trouble.

I wouldn't mind paying $5 for ED, even $15, or $20.Probebly the most hyped game right now in the db community, yet for good reason though.
You guys should try to a search for some of the old ED screenshots just when it was in classic. Now it's in pro, and I'm assuming it's gonna have twice the quality of any screenshots of it you'll find.
Though that's just me.

Although I'd probebly pay $15-$20 for any darkbasic/darkbasic pro game, if it was really a quality game.
