Dark GDK / polygon collision problems

In the 3d flight simulator I am making the terrain is kind of complex with hills and such and I need the plane to collide with it realistically so I set object collision to polygons. This however slows the frame rate down dramatically. Is there any way to fix this problem so I have realistic collisions and a steady frame rate?
