yeah, I liked Firestarter 2 casue i never read the book.

From a script point of view it is good, and quite watchable. One of the best films i have seen in a while.

Contains loads of original lines too. Hence my facination with it. I manage to get one or 2 movies a week. And it is the best since The Skulls (Not sure if it was The Skulls or just Skulls) for story. Although changing lanes was quite good.

Web Design Starting from $200. Special limited offer. MSN or Email me for more information.

Long time no post...

Anyway, it's the subbed versions that I've seen, Raven. I'm without Sky (I've got BBC Freeview, though), so I don't get Cartoon Network or anything - means I've had to download all the episodes I've got: 1-14. Of course, I don't even have the Uni's broadband connection now, so I can't download more episodes! Noooooo!

Is that a GitS poster? I recognise the dog, but the cyborg.

Incidentally, not quite Dead Alive, but a Dead or Alive film is in the works. As much as I like the game, I've got a sneaking suspicion the film is going to fall a bit short!

CNX is a pretty cool channel, beats the living poop out of CN-US's adult swim
:: shudders ::

they're only upto episode 17 atm for SAC... so your not that far behind, if you have the chance get the basic Sky or cable packages, like £8-10/month something cheap like that - they usually come with Sci-Fi ... which has alot of uncut manga.

Channel4 also used to show alot of manga but at obscene times of the nite like 1-4am and randomly without advertising.
BBC2 also has a spate of them from time to time... just a case of checking the midnight listings

the Dog is Motoko's and the cyborg is the new Motoko herself, i've seen an unathourised clips from it already - and it certainly looks awesome, i mean they put alot of good CG into SAC - but the pure blend and depth put into Innnocence is mind blowing... and the animations are just so realistic its hard to believe its hand drawn characters still.

as for Dead or Alive, you know there is ALREADY a film by that name (wonder if the developers know this) ... was a pretty awesome japanese film about a war between the angels and devils (nothing to do with the computer game).

I just love this one bit where this angel is standing in the hallway and this guys is comming up the lift and the angel slowly transforms to have wings then when the guy gets to the top he just see this angel with a gun. !BANG! One less A**hole in the world hehee

Hackers? Must... control... fist... of... death...

Excellent in Trainspotting. Good role. Makes up for the sadness that is hackers. I mean cmon. Cannot overstate how much we laughed and laughed in the cinema at that film. Luckily we were smashed otherwise would have walked out in like 2 mins. Almost as much fun as watching The Exorcist at midnight on Haloween (also battered). Hohoho, the 70's loved smoking doctors in hospitals in those days.

Yeah, I've heard about the other Dead or Alive film, Raven, although I thought it was more of a gangster sort of affair. I might take a look at it if I ever get the chance. As for the beat 'em up's film: providing Kasumi looks nice, I'll be happy!

Of course Innocence is going to be mind blowing - the first GitS was groundbreaking in anime, who knows what GitS 2 is going to be like! I wonder if there's going to be more Fuchikomas/tanks in it... And a scene as spine-chilling as the Puppetmaster's first speech would be nice, too!

Anyway, trying to get back to the topic a bit: The Mummy Returns was a pretty good action film. Has anyone seen the Scorpion King? What's that like?

I have no one favorite but I do have a few I really like.

The Dark Crystal
The Crow
A Beautiful Mind
Pulp Fiction (very surprised that no one said this one yet)
We Were Solders (ditto above)

As for Anime Movies

Akira
Ghost in the Shell
X
Evangelion the Movie (the 2nd one)
Tenchi Muyo in Love
Tenchi Muyo 2 - A Midsummer's Dream

There was this one Japanese Movie (not anime) that I saw that was REALLY good. I can't remember the name though, it was the main character's name, started with a 'K'. The plot was some shady guy befriends a kid who's on a journy to find his mom. Wish I could remember what it was called.

my top animé
1. Ghost in the Shell
2. Vampier Hunter-D
3. Patlabour 2 (was much more thought than the first)
4. Princess-Muyo
5. Akira

those are probably my top favs ... though i don't think there is a single one i don't like - some bore me now after like alot of repeats.
however for normal films, i don't think i really have a top list for them as there aren't many i really like, but i'd probably be something like.

1. The Matrix
2. LOTR - The Two Towers
3. Aliens
4. Spaceballs
5. Star Wars V - The Empire Strikes Back

those would probably be it... i mean there are some movies i like more, but its more for the overall watch them over and over again without them getting boring
and all cept LOTRs i've gotta have seen like a good 2-300 times

"Gone with the wind" was recently voted the best movie ever in a major UK survey. Another on the List was "Its a wonderful life" with James Stewart made it to No. 3 ... I really liked this movie. In terms of today, LOTR is one of my fav movies of all times.

I watched Matrix:Reloaded twice last weekend.

I thought it was ok, but I think the problem is Neo does'nt suffer enough, I mean he nearly gets turned into an agent, other than that he's too busy comming to peoples rescue to do much else. I reckon that for an audience to enjoy an action movie, they have to feel a connection to the hero, this was missing . I was too interested in those evil twins, I hope they return in the final movie, they had a certain coldness that really contrasted with the OTT lovey dovey relationship between Neo and Trinity.

Hackers sucks, I hate hacker movies, in fact I've never seen a computer orientated movie that was even watchable - Pirates of... (that B.Gates vs Apple thingy) was quite good, but more biographical than anything.

Ohh, while all the film buffs are here...
I remember this movie starring Rutger Hauer - homicidal alien comes to earth and Rutger (a cop) has to work with a new partner to get rid of it. It was set in a sorta futuristic world but not too Bladerunnerish. The partner was English, in fact I think it was set in London. Rutger's character was addicted to chocolate and coffee.

Anyone know what it was called? - one of the coolest horrors I've seen and can't get hold of it (could'nt find it on the net anywhere).

cause its gotta be THE most definitive movie of our generation
GiTS has inspired so many Sci-Fi films and genre's .. although the best Animé ever was voted to be Akira, the film is good (the 4 volume manga was better) but it lacked the real content of the story.

i mean GiTS was translated from the original Manga and wasnt just a film adaptation of it but was an entirely new story from a small 16part series on a Cybernetics future of Japan and howto control them... this spawned GiTS : The Puppetmaster
which gave rise to "what if we made an Ai so intelligent that it actually became Sentient?" ... this is what the puppetmaster was. Created by the US government for tactical data espoinage project 2501 was a hyper intelligent program capable of learning and adapting to a situation. The film was basically based upon the struggle between the "puppetmaster" who has become self-aware and those wanting to kill him to make sure he didn't spread thier secrets.

It is actually quite ironic in a sense that a film so heavily based on the ideals and such of GiTS (the Matrix) would actually be taking an exactly opposite stance. because in GiTS it is a case of man trying to destroy a new life before it becomes dangerous and in the Matrix its the Machines trying to destory man before they become to dangerous.

both a story of survival... which is where Innocence comes in.
The story has evolved and the merger of Motoko and the Puppetmaster have achieve to actually complete the task of procreation & dieing, something that illudes machines.
And a struggle between actually accepting these new sentient lifeforms or destroying them before they can be seen as equals - really tapping into the pure preducices of man

thats why Ghost in the Shell is so special, its something that defined the "what if..." in a way that was actually realistic to the future. Things like the Matrix/Blade Runner/Terminator, they're all good films - but they still break so far from the reality of what could happen. GiTS was just so down to earth in its portrayal, there was no fanciful stuff in it ... everything in it is a close reality.

i doubt it... not many places even sell it anymore.
you could find it on Amazon.co.uk or Manga.co.uk ... theres a shop in London called Mr Kittykats, which is an awesome place for Manga
i'll see if i can dig up the address.

if your desperate to see it and don't want to buy it then keep watching Sci-Fi as they show the dubbed American (version2) which is the one you'll commonly find.
dubbed version1 is better as its slightly longer with better subtext and subtitled probably gives the best impression (has a better soundtrack some say, but i prefer the american soundtrack)

Hulk was nice - i'm a comic fan (DC/Marvel/Vertigo/etc) and a really big fan of special fx. Slightly different from the original storyline, but fit just nice - gotta luv the snips on Stan 'The Man' Lee & Lou Ferrighno at the labs

yes yes, let me just close my ears so that u may bombard that movie with ur 'unique' critiques i still feel Ang Lee manage to pull it off on his first superhero movie attempt.. hope one day he'll be as good as John Woo

Actually, GitS isn't that hard to find in the UK - I've seen it plenty of times in HMV, Icfcfan. Don't know which version it is, but I'm certainly happy with it, and it has the best music I've ever heard in a film! Wait 'til you get near the end and Kusanagi's in the chopper - woah.

It's certainly not a film for everyone, though - it's very heavy on philosophy and the question "What does it mean to be human?" crops up all the way through. It'll also take a couple of watches before you really begin to appreciate it, since every tiny little detail contributes something to the story, most of which you won't notice the first time round.

If you want a better introduction to 'mature' anime, Akira's a good one to go for - similar sort of film, still with an intelligent plot and background, but a bit easier on the casual viewer. Infamous for it's violence, too!

Incidentally, my avatar is a pic of the cyber-body the Puppetmaster acquires and most of my profile is made from it's quotes!

Thanks Grim, I see your a horror fan - I love horrors, my top 5.

1. Pumpkinhead
2. Dawn of the Dead
3. Pet Semetary
4. Split Second
5. Children of the Corn

I loved the first Corn, but could'nt stand 2-3, never watched 4 - after they started destroying the storyline with explanations etc, the atmosphere in the first movie was very intense, the kids were all very well cast, esp Molokai (sp?).

Pumpkinhead is a work of art. I reckon Aliens Resurrection owes a lot to this movie.

Dawn of the Dead is the Zombie movie set in a shopping mall - awesome and funny too - reminds me of going shopping while nursing a hangover.

yea Children of the Corn 1 was pretty good, although Isaac was one annoying little bastard. Malachai was cool but he kinda reminded me of an evil Huck Finn lol.

Ok. So I've cocked up 3 replies now cos typing in dark while lying in bed. Grrr. Brief version:-

1. The fog? Herbert version? Book better. Survivor better. Yes.
2. Split second. Cool film.
3. My fave horror? The Medusa Touch. Scary.
4. American Psycho? Nah. Bundy. More disturbing cos based on real events
5. All hacker movies are crap. But Sneakers (was it spelt like that) was watchable. And War Games was cool as a kid
6. I liked Shrek... Black Hawk Down was not as good as I thought it would be
7. Top Gun was extreme cool when I was growing up. Then again I grew up on a mixture of US/British air force bases, so I used to love planes as a kid. Hot Shots was also right up there (But not as good as Airplane obviously...)

Cheers

Leon, that's a great movie, with a very young Natalie Portman. Definately the inspiration for the Hitman games. Goodfellas is great too, I love those Italian-American gangster films. I liked the first half of Full Metal Jacket, when they were in the boot camp, sorta lost track of it after that. Tarrintino movies are always great, my fave would have to be True Romance too, Christian Slater is a great and funny actor.

There's so many amazing films from the 90's - I'm very sceptical when buying DVD's, so I tend to buy classics more than anything, like Shawshank Redemption, which I got for £5 from GAME - what a bargain!.

90's? What about the 80's! Kinda worrying now some of my favourite films are coming up to 2 decades old!!! (Aliens/Terminator/Predator etc.).

That Kill Bill thing looks kind of cool. Anyone seen the previews? Basically it's whatserface with a big sword and 70's styley clothes. Bit like Crouching Tiger Hidden Panda, but mixed with 70's stuff. And with birds. Nice.

Bit embarrassed about the Stephen King bit. . Read all his books for about a decade (then stopped when he got run over). Must have been tired.

Yeah, come to think of it, the 80's did have a lot of great movies too, like Gremlins! - watched that last week, I'd totally forgot how funny it was. Maybe I'm just getting old, but I get really put off by too much computerised effects - I'd rather see good stunt/fight choreography than amazing computer animation, does'nt help when you can spot it a mile off like most of us here probably can.

IT was a rubbish movie. What with John boy in it and everything. Yuck. And the killing the spider thing just didn't really work as a film scene. Book was pretty good. Although I read the hard back version and it was like half a house.

Favourite King movie/book combo has to be Misery. Class. The amount of suspense was amazing. Think my fave book has to be Christine or Firestarter. Both films were pretty rubbish. Pet Semarary (how does he spell it again? something to do with kids spelling...)

Favourite horror writer of the last 5 years or so has to be Richard Layman. The Island was the first I read, and the best. But amazingly hard to put down, with the best ever last line to a book. Ever. Started reading that around 10pm one night, and finished the whole book about 3pm. Couldn't put it down. Very good horror writer, and also a complete pervy git. Bit like Stephen King, but doesn't avoid sexual perversion subjects like King tends to do (or any sex scenes really overall). You have to have read his stuff to know what I mean. Just the way he creates a situation, and brings up the dodgy circumstances that could rise (eg. bird (who is an ex-model), while having a bath, gets trapped in bathtub during a quake. Bloke comes to help her, but she doesn't know him. And the whole of society is in a mess for a few hours...). Very good stuff.

Cheers

Nothing wrong with FX. Just that sometimes it can look a bit rubbish. eg. lots of scenes where people ride on things. Such as Star Wars Ep. 2, where Annie jumps on a big monster and gets flung around a bit. Might as well have used a real dummy on an elephant for the effect it has. Same thing with old Legoland in one of the LOTR movies. Bad effect. Or in Matrix 2 when Neo fights loads of Smiths. It's not that good basically.

Interestingly I preffered Terminator 1 to it's sequel. While 2 was very very good, 1 was a better movie, and 2 felt a bit like a wait for the next FX every now and again. Also was a lower rating (15, not 18), so the shooting in the legs was a bit poo. T3 is 12A here, so not holding out massive hope of gaping stomach wounds. Could be all Carmaggedon, so that machines killing each other does not require a higher rating. Sigh. T2 unofficial books seem to be better (Arnie is human in it, not a robot... well, he is a robot too...).

Cheers

Yeah, I'd agree - T1 is better than T2, in fact the only sequel I can think of that bettered it's predecessor is...

(can anyone guess)

Aliens.
