I bought DBPro while I was still working on a DBClassic project.

I was under the impression that migrating from DBC to Pro would be a straight forward thing.

It is certainly Not!

I try for a few hours now to add the included files (6 of them) to the project manager.

When they files are not included in the project manager list the program runs very slowly (7fps), graphics lost their transparency and most of the text and functionality is lost in limbo. To mention only few problems.

When I Include the files, the compiler will give me bizzare errors like:

Command inc missmatch parameters.

Oh! come on, do I really need to explain that the inc command is not the most complicated command to write!!!!

All that on a patched Version.

I also tried instead of opening the files to cut and paste the code.
I tried browse I tried Add New.

I was very happy to get DBPro but now I am not impressed at all!

From where did you get that impression?

Sounds like you've got problems with your computer - what is it by the way ?

Quote: "When I Include the files, the compiler will give me bizzare errors like:

Any code to back this 'problem' up ?

Quote: "All that on a patched Version."

I presume you mean 4.1

You dont exactly help your case by not show code examples y'know...
By the way, the actual error message is probably 'Parameter mismatch in command 'inc' at line...'

Good news everyone! I really am THAT good...

I take it you haven't visited this forum before?

Generally speaking, you have to rewrite apps from the ground up.

Yeah - definitely a rewrite. If you're really lucky, you might be able to salvage a couple of functions or subroutines, but that's about it.

I thought that is would be an easy migration too when I did that. It wasn't, but it is possible. When you re-write your game, you'll probably end up writing it better. Just don't give up, it is possible.

My biggest problem was collisions, it took me a while, but I figured out a better and more accurate way to do them than what I was doing before in DBC.

My recode has been much better so far as well - the best bit is the GUI, which is now broken down into a series of functions and is all handled behind-the-scenes from the main code.

Everything's become vaguely organised this time 'round!

Hey thanks guys for the input. I was very moody last night, all thanks to the heat and the migration problems. Still I tried to be as polite as possible! DBPro is a love/hate thing, isn't it?

To answer to my quoted-counter-questioning:

The impression of being a straight forward migration comes from the following:

a) Before I buy dbPro, I've never came across any marketing banner, website/addvert etc, that said it is difficult and as the friend wrote above, you are lucky if you salvage a couple of functions. (i dont quote him, but you can scroll up and see the exact reply)
b) after I bought dbPro, the Migration Page are just a few tips and suggestions. I have the book at home but I think it was about 1 and a bit page long.
c) Most of DBC scripts and code listings in the forum say that they will or might run in DBPro, also the opposite is true, DBPro wil run in DBC. This suggests some sort of compatibility which it exists...

I am not trying to slander the program or say it is bad or badly documented, even microsoft products have problems in that sense. As I said it is an impression not a quote from any website with my reasons.

About the code. It is as simple as an "inc id" in a function in an included file, and yes the error message was what you quoted. You win a cigar! After all this is not a code question as such, is more on the fundamentals of the editor/compiler. But here goes.

Quote: "
function registerObject(ai_type)
pos = glb_count(2)
id = glb_visualObj(pos,1):`item 1 is the object_id

`increase id and position in array
inc id, 1:` the id can be any increment
inc pos, 1:` the pos is always the next position in the array

'store in image and count arrays
glb_visualObj(pos,1) = id
glb_visualObj(pos,2) = ai_type
glb_visualObj(pos,3) = 1:` 1=Alive 0=Dead

glb_count(2) = pos
endFunction id
"

This code is an array manager really. I worry a bit because I dont see any reason why something as simple as that fails to compile/run. It does work like a charm on DBClassic... like the rest of the program.

If somebody can answer that i will be grateful, because rewriting something simple as this, must mean something else than just typing it over again.

I've been reading and contributing to this forum since the begining of June. As far as I looked I didn't find a recent topic about migration but I am sure there is one somewhere. Still a search function would help... How many years do you have to be in the forum to ask questions and open a topic?

My computer is more than the specified configuration at the side of the box. I still call it ZX Spectrum.

Finaly, I'd love to start rewriting the code, I was thinking to do that for some time now all I needed was an excuse.

Thanks guys for all the feedback, sorry if I've been moody and if I got people uncomfortable, no programming language comes without issues. As long as the development team behind DBPro is still active it will go from strength to strength for sure.

Don't fall for the marketing hype.

DBP are pretty good with marketing, sometimes they can be extremely misleading though. For example, the box says supports 3DS models, which simply wasn't true until P4.1 (6 months after release), and even now not all 3DS models (notably MilkShape exports) work.

The answer is - don't believe a single piece of the marketing hype, just try the demo and buy it or leave it based on that.

How about this eh? Real Time Chat via the forum!!!

What you say is true, for 99.9% of companies (except for Microsoft ). No need to open a can of worms here. The fact is that I am easyly impressed, even tin foil impresses me!

I get many impressions left by good intentions, this is the edge of marketing. I didnt mean to be so pi**ed off yesterday anyway! I just needed my medication and my hard bed

You had to use DX in the original program, P2,3 and 4... So what were you using ?

No it didn't. 3DS NEVER worked AT ALL before 1.04, apart from with a very few select models. Sure, I could LOAD 3DS models before 1.04, but I couldn't texture them, and half the object manipulation commands didn't work on them.

@Toady - I think Raven meant the DirectX .X model format, not DirectX itself!

because it worked perfectly, even in the Trial versions (which was what i was using until 3.1)

in patch4 it just locks the program

I had a few problems with 3DS before P4, so I just stick with X Files... Well, I would if BBC2 was still showing it...

What's this?

More smilleys? Oh I havent even bothered with any models yet, my code is on the to_be_mirgated stage, plus on DBC where it actually works, it is on the prototype objects as models stage... Cubes flying around sphears and plains...

Exciting eh?

The day will come when my models will come to life in my game... <-- new smiley

I don't know much about 3D, but for data and 2D it is mostly the same
with a few graphical gotchas, i.e. http://www.darkbasicpro.com/apollo/view.php?t=13527&b=1
