Where do coders of classic updates stand with regards to copyright on sound effects ? My game used the usual set of "Space Invader" sounds, as has every other similar invders game, be it commercial/shareware or free. Are we all ok to use these sounds ?

You're not free to use them, as Hasbro has demonstrated in the past by numerous lawsuits. Does this stop people from making clones? Not really, but are you willing take that risk?

I guess it was always going to take some greedy, faceless American corporation to take this step. In my view it's scandalous, Invaders is surely THE game to be made when starting out on the long road to games coding. These are sad days for the arcade gamer, with clueless giants like Hasbro lording it, and the once great Atari name now tacked onto `updated` and modern games.
Thanks for the insight, interesting reading.
