Have you made the faces for the top of the leg like it shows in the tutorial? (you said you're gonna do it, but you can't extrude them without making the faces in the first place). Once you have made the faces, you can select the faces by doing the following:
1. Click on the 'Select' button on the upper right side of the screen.
2. This will reveal four buttons down below, marked vertex, face, group and joint.
3. Click on the 'face' button.
4. Place your mouse at the top left of the leg where you want to select the faces.
5. Click the left mouse button and hold it, dragging it down and right until you have selected the faces that you want. Let go of the button once you have selected them all.
6. As a note, if you make a mistake and don't select enough faces, you can hold down the shift key while you select additional faces.
7. Click the extrude button. (The faces should still be selected.)
8. Drag in the direction in which you want to extrude. FYI: If you only want to extrude on the Y, click on the X and Z boxes that come up on the right when you click 'extrude'. This will only allow you to move on the Y axis.

That part is done.

Perhaps you should work on a more basic tutorial first. Here is one I found at Psionic:
