I have a number of .x files with individual buildings within them and I am trying to work out the best way to create a level/map combining multiples of these buildings with a road or two, some trees, walls, maybe a fountain etc to make a village.

Would you normally load all these .x files into your Darkbasic program and then position them manually using commands? I tried this before and it is cumbersome and I was never happy with the lighting results.

Am I right in thinking I could get a program to perform the above and create a complete level with lighting effects, and perhaps realistic grass and water effects, which I could then output in a format to be loaded into Darkbasic (or some other dev tool if DB would strip too much of the prettiness)?

I am not asking which tool is best, I am just wondering whether people would normally perform the task manually within the code or use a tool, and if they use a tool does it allow for multiple .x file imports, lighting, grass and water.

3D World Studio apparently supports .x file imports but it's not listed under File->Import, perhaps because I am running the trial, or perhaps it's because I don't know what I am doing!

I bought Gile[s] here a couple of years ago, I could upgrade that perhaps if it does what I am after.

Thanks for any tips. I don't mind spending some time working on a tool to find out how to do what I want, I just don't want to spend a lot of time on a tool that isn't capable of doing what I want even when I know what I am doing.

i reccomend creating a large super map, sort of a prebuilt level just load up your objects, -i suggest milkshape for low buget- in any modeling program and move them int place

you might have to check dbp boards for so coding answers,

am pretty sure that you just need a 3d coordinate (xyz)

am a bit rusty on my coding

Thanks for the reply.

To clarify, are you saying just load my houses from code and position them from there, or are you saying create a 'super map' with some 3rd party tool?

You didn't mean Milkshape to help with any of the above right? That would be to create players or creatures to populate my map once completed...? At this stage I just want to be able to wander around the town once created, so if I make it first person all I should need is scenery.

The project is meant to be a learning experience, not too worried about players/monsters, its supposed to be more like a graphical demo at least for now.

Going to post my query on the coding forum as I think you are right in that it would be more relevant.

Cheers,
