Borland Builder 5.5 is free and license free
Borland Builder 6.x is free

so erm... why do you think they're not?
DevC, Codewarrior, MingW, etc... are all free and can be found on sourceforge.net

i'd suggest you check the Borland site... it might not come with ALL of the CPP libraries that purchased ones do, but its still free.

The Borland free compiler comes without the editor too.

Go for either Dev-C++, or the basic MinGW compiler + pick your own editor (lots out there for it).

Or, as I see you live in the UK, you could get the August edition of PCPlus - that has Codewarrior 6 on the cover.

I also recommend Dev-C++, it's what I used before I bought VC++ - Oh, and another free one is LCC which I believe a number of modders use.
