EDIT 14/09/2014: Transcendent is the successor to this project.

Updates

10/01/10 - As of today, I am no longer working on this project, this is because I have formed a team with Asteric and Shaun of the Dead and we are now creating an FPS game. This doesnt mean that this project is dead, I will be working on this from time to time but I will be using my own custom renderer which is optimized for this game, so I'm not sure if this game will qualify for a WIP thread here on TGC once I release the next demo as I'm not longer using any TGC products. Once I'm close to releasing the next demo, I will create a new thread, and the game may have a new name .

What is it?
Starscape One is a Single-Player (Possibly Multiplayer) Space Sim started in DBPro and is now being developed in DarkGDK. You're a pilot of a futuristic space fighter of the future in a freeform universe where there is no limits of what you can do. It will be possible to go anywhere, from landing on planet surfaces, to dodging the many asteroids making saturns ring system in a completely seamless environment with no loading screens to spoil your experience.

Demos
Coming soon

Wow that looks awesome! Although one thing, I'd up the texture resolution on the planets as they seem quite low res.
Other than that, SWEET!

My planets resolution is 2048x1024 and if I upped it to about 4096x2048 it will show signs of lag but I was thinking of when you fly into the atmosphere, the ground slowly fades from the planet texture to a sphere with a detail texture that repeats about 50 times using scale object texture, except the colour of the ground will change to the colour of the detail texture.

I used a textured plain with a 1024x1024 ring texture. Also its not Earth its some earth-like planet I threw in there

Looks great, reminds me of another DarkBASIC game called Starwraith - and believe me, thats a compliment. The guy who makes the Starwraith and currently Evochron series of games probably is one of the few that actually makes a profit with his DarkBASIC games.

Keep it up!

@Tha_rami

The Starwraith Series (SW3 in particular) actually inspired me to make Starscape One

Oh wow, sign up at the Starwraith forums then to tell Vice, the creator of the games. He'll be extremely glad to hear he inspired people programming spacesims.

Hey Guys

Thanks for all your comments!

Here is a new screenshot of the new detail mapping when entering a planet, it only works with rocky barren worlds because the ground texture doesnt match up to the planet texture yet.

I was planning it to be like that actually, where you can customise your ship and go flying around the galaxy. But i am going to add an arena mode, where your ship can battle other players ships or you can make a team to battle other players teams and you can customise your capital ship however you want.

Heres a quick update

For the last few hours i've been converting the game code to use find free object() instead of using confusing object numbers but the boosting effect stopped working so i am trying to have a go at rewriting it.

Also i hope to release the demo by this weekend

@flickenmaste I would be grateful but at the moment im not having any problems but i may need help with the AI of the computer enemies soon

Ive got the boosting effects ready again (array problems delayed it) and once ive got explosions all set i can finish the demo.

@dark donkey Its all done with ghosted plains with textures, no shaders are in this game and none will ever be (for now). And the skysphere for the grey sky is in front of the sun plain so it appears that its using Bloom.

@Everyone else Sorry guys but the demo is running a little bit late as ive havent had much free time but ill try and get it ready and uploaded as soon as possible.

Very interesting how you got your visual effects, I had wondered how you'd managed it. Still can't wait for that demo!

Ive run into a little problem with the boosting effect.

For some reason when i call the apply_boosteffect(obj,sep,dis) function that i have declared, the variables bseparation(100)=sep and bdistance(100)=dis that are in my function always return 0 even though sep=0.14 and dis=0.35 and as a result the boost plain always appears in the middle of the ship. So im trying to sort it out at the moment. I might need to rewrite it again

I Think i found out whats wrong

the variables bseparation and bdistance are being used as integers by default and in my old system it used # to make it a real number so i think thats the problem, im going to test and see now.

EDIT LOL that worked, epic fail?

Looks like a vantastic game, But watch out, you wan't it to be beliveable. Not "go attack the lizard pepole of desert world by deystroying there armada of 1000 ships with your fighter!".
That woul blow it no matter how good the efects, the story is a big part of the game.

The first image I could have mistaken for a Hubble Space Telescope picture - very realistic!

Perhaps you should try looking at a LOD (level of detail) approach, so that the planets don't become pixelated when you roam around on the surface.

I also like the effect of the light refracting off of the atmosphere (if that's what it's doing).

To make your game even more immersive, you could program it so that shooting at a planet makes an impact crater at the corresponding point on the planet's texture.

Those are probably the best graphics I've seen in DBPro. Keep up the good work.

The optomist's right, The pessimist's right.

Things are going quite good actually, except ive run into a big problem with collision which has stopped me from releasing a demo + school has started again for me.

@calcyman - Thanks for the comment! Ive been trying to master the realism for ages now lol so thanks and i will think about bullet impacts on the surface, maybe i should use plains, except that will result with alot z-fighting.

Heres a quick update

Well im on the verge of releasing a demo i just need to do abit of polishing and packing and then i will upload. The demo will be a little bit different, instead of blowing up asteroids, you will simply explore, at the start you can customise your scenario (atmosphere colour, planet, nebula cloud etc) and soon you will be able to import your own planet textures.

But the text in this editor can make my framerate to 30FPS on a Geforce 8400M so if anyone has a link to a faster text dll please share it

Hey guys sorry i haven't been on for a while.

The first demo is finally finished you can download on the top of this thread. Here are a few details about the demo:

StarScape One Exploration Demo

This demo of StarScape One lets you explore a random solar system, you can visit the local planet, fly around, shoot randomly. The controls are...

Arrowkeys = Turn and Pitch
< and > = Roll left and right
Tab = Afterburner
Control = Shoot

Secret Controls

Note:
These controls refer to unfinished features and can make the game go weird.

Space = Activate/ Deactivate Boosters (Drifting in space or not)

Enjoy the demo!

<edit> It didnt let me upload i'll have another go
