Hey everyone,

I've been working on a puzzle game, you may have seen it before, it's with 15 pegs. 1 peg on the top, 2 below that, 3 below that, 4 below that, then 5 on the last row.

You start with one peg missing. Basically, like checkers, you select a peg and 'jump' it over another one into the free slot. Then you remove the peg you jumped. The object is to finish with the least amount of pegs.

Apparently you're really good if you can finish with 2 pegs left, extremely smart if you remain with just one peg, and a genius if you can leave the last peg in the original empty slot.

I've got the Alpha version here. I'm sorry for the large file size but I included 2 mp3's for the menu system and the game itself. The 'Instructions' and the 'Settings' option doesn't work yet in the Front End.

In gameplay, basically there are two sections. First you use the cursor to select an existing peg. Then the cursor automatically jumps to the available holes, where you put the selected peg into. I have no idea how confusing it may be for a first time player so I'm spelling it all out

Here are some screens:

Keyboard instructions:

Front End:
Down arrow key highlights option.
Return key selects option.

Game:
Down arrow key highlights peg options.
Space-bar selects peg and selects empty slot.
When the game's over, press 'Enter' to start a new game.
If you select a peg then decide you can't or don't want to select that peg anymore, press 'Ctrl' to cancel the move.
Press 'ESC' to exit back to the Front End.

Known Issues:
If you go into gameplay, back out to the Front End, then go back into gameplay, the pegs look really funky. If anyone has some insight as to why, I would be extremely grateful.

Any other questions, please let me know.

I just realized that I should have posted this in the Beta forums. My extreme apologies if this irks anyone, and if an administrator sees this post then feel free to move it there.

My bad

Seems to have trouble reading the keyboard after the first space bar press. Exiting and playing the game several times in a row produces a messed display.

Good news everyone! I really am THAT good...

Hmmm... strange.

Once you select space-bar, the cursor will jump into the first available empty slot. Since, in the beginning, there is only one free slot, pressing down on the arrow key will do nothing unless you press space-bar again to jump the selected peg into that slot, or press 'Ctrl' to cancel the move and select another peg.

Fair enough - probably missed that. Would be helpful if the title routine allowed you to move the selection bar up as well as down.

Finally managed to get the hang of it...

Yeah, this game is still definitely in its Alpha stages. Believe it or not, or something so simple as enabling the 'up' arrow, it was giving me problems so I cut it temporarily.

Also I want to display the controls on the upper left-hand side of the screen. Maybe I should do something about that blue background too

Why does the up arrow give so much trouble - its only the opposite of down...

MrTAToad: That's exactly why it was confusing to me as to why it was giving me a problem.

Since I work full time at Electronic Arts, pulling 60+ hours a week, I've barely had a spare moment to work on the game. But by the end of next week the game should be looking a lot better.

Right now the resolution automatically adjusts to the max of the computer that's running the game (up to 1024x768), and in the settings I'm going to make that adjustable. Also, anyone have any ideas for a cool background? I'm thinking of some terrain but I also don't want to make the game run slower when it's so simple.

Also, I have the code already written to make this completely 3D, with 15 pegs on each side of a massive 4-sided triangle. Now *that* would be difficult to beat

Ahhhh - another EA person....

In Fifa, can we have decent goalies please - and get rid of the one touch thing...

Anyway, back to your game... it could become quite different, although the fade on the 'destroyed' blocks need to increase as sometimes its hard to see what is a selectable block, and what isn't...

MrTAToad: Thanks for the good suggestions! Yes, I'm always tinkering with what kind of visual response should occur when a block is selected, moved, and taken away. We have an arcade here at work with some old classic games and I was interested to discover that every little good or bad move has a proper sound and graphics response. I guess with the pyschology of gaming, players like to know that they did something right not just by getting a higher score... I don't know...

Also, my next milestone will be mouse support rather than the less intuitive, clunky keyboard controls. Since this is my first DarkBasic program I haven't investigated as how to detect which block is clicked with the mouse and so on.

How do you like the music?

Oh yeah, Fifa is being made in EA's other Vancouver office, about 15 minutes away--- I'm working on the new NHL and Need For Speed games.

Never did complete NFS:HP2 - the controls were way to sensitive unfortunately - besides, I'm very good a wrapping cars around trees.

The music goes quite well with the game...
