Not really, it depends on the person, and for the record, Maya is ridiculously simple in my opinion, but that brings me to my point, that's ME, not you, not anyone else.
People have different preferences, they can learn faster, slower or easier than other people, no one is the same as anyone else really. Some may find Max as the "holy grail" of modeling softwares (Which it is not in terms of difficulty in my opinion) some may not.
Whether you do or don't does not belong to the point.
And when you say "people" you would say that you (probably) and some people you've heard about do it, and then for that you must stereotype modelers within that class of people because most of the ones you know is in it, which is incredibly arrogant.
I for one, as said previously, think Maya is as easy as pie, and I think that Max is relatively simple as well (Although I don't own it, I have worked on it, demos and whatnot), the thing that most people probably (At least what I think they do) thinks makes these softwares "hard" is that they are pretty packed with advanced features that are sort of hard to learn at a start, and because they think that those more advanced features are hard, they must act like a lot of people, they generalize the entire software as being impossible.
Bare in mind there are some that probably think like that, some that don't, and that's, again, my point, everyone differs. Some may think that using a computer is incredibly difficult, some may not, it's always about that in the end.
And 3DS Max has no less learning curve than any other software out there if you are that kind of person that thinks it isn't, and is impossible for anyone who doesn't.
