In the past I've felt slightly restricted when making games due to my lack of modelling and texturing skills with custom characters.

By way of an experiment I ripped some assets from a game I used to enjoy called Kingpin which was based on the quake 2 engine and therefore used relatively low poly character models.

I converted a bunch of the .MDX files to .MD2 then imported them into Milkshape, adjusted the models and re rigged to the FPSC animated bi-ped skeleton.

Attached is a pic of how they turned out.

Below is a link to a couple of videos
http://hosted.filefront.com/Nomad5oul

I doubt there will be any way I can distribute them unfortunately but I'd recommend anyone not intending to make a commercial game to give it a try if only for experience of making external assets FPSC compatible.

I just played Kingpin again a couple of months ago. It has been sitting on the shelf gathering dust for years. I remembered the models being low poly, but I was surprised at just how low poly they actually were after getting used to FPSC. LOL It was a rough game for it's time.

I'm sure it's good practice, but really too low poly even for FPSC. You could have made one of the street girls instead of that bruiser, you know? LOL

Best.

Nomad, you'll need to check this, but I got Kingpin from an abandonware site a year or so back. I think you'll find that you could probably use them in a non-commercial FPSC game.

LOLs some of the textures are actually 256x256...

Whats bad about that? Some people still use that size, it actually looks alot better then the bigger textures.

i don't know, in my experience low res textures look extremely streched and pixaleted but that ofcourse depends on the size of the model and your uv mapping.

I'll take your point with the dumbells,
but the team fortress characters look 1024 times better with the high res textures!

You can determine if something is abandonware quite accurately by checking wikipedia. It's not so bad as to report the false dissolution of a company. Basically, if the company goes bust and no-one bought it, you can probably get away with selling it even (it would technically be illegal, but there would be no individual who held the copyright and was able to bring you to court). If the company was merged or otherwise rendered no-existence, then you could release them non-commercially and no-one would notice or care.

Thats interesting. I found Kingpin on 2 abandonware sites
http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=5227

The company that made Kingpin (Xatrix Entertainment) became Gray Matter Interactive who are now 'Defunt' and got merged with Treyarch as per the wikipedia link
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xatrix_Entertainment

Does that mean I can make a non commercial FPSC game using these models and distribute? If someone or a mod can confirm I'd be grateful.

In the meantime, I thought I'd try out the bloom shader Ertlov released with them and the results are quite promising as in the attached pic.

Coffeegrunt is correct. Theres a bloom shader released there which can be applied to entities and doesn't require the use of any mods.

However I'd recommend using EFX mod in conjunction with it to give you a finer level of control over the effect without having to delve into the shader file.

I've attached a pic with a more subtle amount of bloom on the characters compared with the last pic and more consistent with environment lighting / bloom. If you compare with the 1st pic its still a noticeable difference / improvement.

Also updated my video link showing the new bloom versions of them.

Which will result in the fury of the mods.Unless you have permission to distribute whatever media it is in your games it is illegal to use it.
Just thought I'd throw that in.
And I (along with most of the good members of our forums get REALLY UNHAPPY if someone does do this.

Thanks for clarifying FredP

The best thing I can think of is to send an email to Activision and see if they don't mind for the purposes of a non commercial project. Xatrix Entertainment became Gray Matter who no longer exist but some of the team are now working for Treyarch who are owned by Activision.

I'll finish off the 2 characters I'm currently porting over but if I can't get confirmation about distributing them it'll be back to the drawing board (or modelling application at least).

Not true, its the artist. anyone can make a good texture if there Good at it.
Take millenima's work for example, he use's 1024X1024, now, lets look at a gun in DOD no Day of deafeat:source, I mean the Kickass mod for half-life1.

That itself looks brilliant and stands out saying, I`m uber high res.
also the less pixels there are... the less definition there is, and not to remember FPSC blur's texture's on there size, which I sorta proved in a thread awhile back, using larger texture size's do indeed increase the texture quality, and thats because fpsc has Mipmap(I think its called that?) which blur's texture's.

Also that TF2 Image looks as-if team fortress two is being ported to the ds

Oh, offtopic but, the person that did the dumbells is a skilled artist and is infact... a Bannanite...

Lol.
