I need help with mesh deformation in DBPro. I’m using MilkShape 3D to export models. When I use the DirectX 8.0 exporter the program freezes or says that it can’t load the model. When I use the DirectX(JT) exporter it loads ok, but the model is invisible. When I export it as a .MD2 it shows up but is not smooth shaded and when I do a checklist for object limbs there is only one. When I export without mesh deformation there is no problem. What am I missing?

Thanks in advance.

PS: Which should I be using for people? DirectX 8.0, DirectX(JT) or .MD2?

nothing, except that DBP still has bad problems with mesh deformation on modells

compile it to md3, then you have some chance that it works, but .X won't work.

and if you have Patch 4 or 4.1 then forget about it because they only support .X format

@Dreamflower

Wrong. P4.1 supports MD2 and MD3 formats and supposedly 3DS (although not very well)

I don't have any problem with milkshape
you should try to modify the options when you export with directx jt

Attreid,

Thanks for your suggestion but I still can't get it to work. What settings do you normally use for objects with mesh deformation?

wrong Rob... MD2, MD3 & MDL only seemd work on a very very very selective few machines. 3DS just doesn't work at all, it crashes Pro.

the only format i can get to work in DBP 1.04.1 is DirectX and thats using everything except spline animation (which they best be adding, because otherwise that means we have only Heirachy & Bone animation and no Mesh Frame animation)

this is on all 14machines in this studio too (because after everyone seemed to be able to use them cept me i tried) ... its not a processor problem, its not a card problem, its not an OS problem, its not a DirectX problem ... its a problem with DBP itself.

each time i try i get the message "load object cannot find object"
it'll be sitting right there and if i change the name to the Dx version exact same place, it works perfectly.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, but nothing has worked (except I didn't try changing all the settings to every possible combination ). Can anyone suggest a foolproof (well at least it works )way to put a MilkShape 3D model with individual limbs (so I can glue things to them) with mesh deformation into DarkBasic Pro?

Check to make sure you vertex's are correctly assigned after you load you're mesh. It seems Milkshape is forgetting bones/joint vertex assignments after loading if they were not animated. When you export you're meshes with animation they looked messed up in DBP.

Just so I know what settings are you using with the JT exporter? I have not been able to export with it and have anything show up in DBP.

I can remember that once I knew how to get a model (though horribly mutilated) into darkbasic pro . But of course I've forgotten it . Here is a link to a picture of what they looked like when I put them in:

(You see their leg was supposed to move up)

Anyway I think I'll just go ahead without mesh deformation . But help would still be appreciated. My next game could use mesh deformation .

entra - that looks like you tried to export from milkshape while still in animation mode. Thats seems to cause limbs to fall off/move around etc.

I can load models fine with either .x exporter. Make sure you are not in animation mode, reduce all the groups to one group and make sure you increase the scale of the model in the exporter or it tends to load in really really tiny.
