Just wondering if there's a program that allows you to actually paint a uv map on a 3d model, instead of splitting it up into seperate 2d planes?

I tried searching but haven't found anything.

Hey - you might want to check this out...

http://www.blacksmith3d.com/

It's not really a 3d UV mapping tool, but it does allow you to paint directly on a 3D model which might be helpful. And they do have a "free" version of their sofware.

'Yeah...I'm gonna' have to ask you to come in on Saturday. That'd be great.'

I know uvmapper pro lets you preview in 3d but does it show what you're doing in 3d in realtime as in while you're painting?

Also that other program linked seems to be alot like zbrush, which I have, but the painting doesn't work right unless you use a high polygon model.

It's way expensive but it does what you want and theres a free trial download so perhaps you'll find it works well enough to justify the cost.Right Hemisphere's award winning Deep Paint 3D delivers an intuitive, easy to use tool to paint and texture 3D models interactively in 3D.

You can drag and drop models from maya into Photoshop CS3 and paint directly onto them, but I think you need to UV map them first.

Just found out that a colleague of mine has deep paint.
Had a little whirl on it, and you DO need to UV map your model first before you can paint on it

It's a wicked program, basically giving you the power of (a cut down) photoshop but painting straight onto your models. It's also only really any good if you hand paint your textures. as far as I can tell you can import a premade texture and paint on it, but you cant say, import a shirt and paint it onto the torso.

Basically, if you can UV map, then this is really worth the dollar dollar, it really powerful. Nothing is goingto just UV map your models for you though

You can also export out the 2d file and all the layers out of DP, straight into PS, work on it, and then import back into DP, its an amazing program, if you want to do serious painting of 3d models its a great program, a must have for serious skinning on models.

hmmm I'm a little confused here. In order for deep paint to work I already have to have a uv map on the object? So could I uvmap the entire model with a single color then modify it with this program?

edit: decided to try out 3d-coat, this is definately what I was looking for. I highly suggest everyone give this a try.

UV map with a single colour? No.. I don't think you quite understand what a UV map is (without meaning to sound very patronising).
You UV map the model, so that all the faces of the mesh are layed out in a logical order on a graph (axis U and V ranging from 0-1)
You'd have the chest, head , hands and so on assigned different areas of this map.

All that deep paint does is let you paint directly onto this UV map by clicking on the model. so, whereas if your arms and chest are in 2 different spots on the UV map, in your paint program you would have to fiddle about with say, stripes to make them line up on the arms and chest, Deep paint lets you paint the strip on the model, whilst calculating where this painted line needs to be drawn on the UV map.

edit #759:

Ok I think I have figured out what you mean, and it appears 3d coat does make a uvmap for you since you can export the texture. It also allows you to use your own uv map but it appears you don't really have to make one.

Trying to import this into x10 and I will tell you my results.

Oh man. You've gota check out 3D-Coat

It does the whole UV mapping thing without having to create the UV map fisrt and allows you to start painting directly onto the model.

Attached is a pic of a classic doom imp model I imported into 3D-coat

Here is the model after I went to work with it using 3D-Coat's tools.

Clearly it looks ridiculous but its the quickest uv map I've ever done at around err 3 mins. LOL

This is really cool and might actually be able to start uv mapping now when I start learning it properly.

The way you can just paint interactively in 3D is way more fun than spending an hour making some 3D mesh jigsaw then painting it flat.

yeah I'm loving it, and it's working great. Only thing I need to work on is making the milkshape to 3dcoat models exactly the same (change slightly). Any suggestions on that?

Probably can use the texture from 3d coat even if the model is slightly different from the conversion to the original milkshape model, haven't tried that yet though.
