Okay, everyone! This is the very first model I have ever made.

It took me a bit to get used to the workings of modelling and animating... and even longer to get the stupid thing to correctly texture, lol.

I want to thank the people on these boards for the great tutorials on how stuff works!

Here is a video of the sabre on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uK-Rb_vlYO4

And some screenies of it:

Well, I'd say it's a bit cartoony.....

Try going to CGTextures, and getting some metallic textures and such for the handle, I dunno if they've got any sort of fire/plasma textures for the blade itself.....

Wow... ME, giving advice to PLYSTIRE.

I see you've got the hang of UVMAPPING, which is a good thing, but that is only the beginning.
Try going online for some texturing tutorials, I originally made my textures in paint, with no uv-map... god did they look crap!

Thanks, guys. I know the texture needs a lot of work, I made it in Paint... lol.

I'll try to find some sort of metal texture for the handle, but I figured since the blade is just supposed to be solid light, then it should be a solid color. I kinda like the way the button looks, though, lol. It almost looks shiny.

Any C+C on the animations? Those took the longest to do so I wanna know what people think of em.

Lol, thanks, CG!

I think if it had arms and fingers, the effect would be much better, but I doubt I have the skill to animate them that well.

Yeh, I tried messing about with Simon's MP6 hands....and failed....

Can't wait for the new release of your mod now...

-=EDIT=-

After seeing that video again, I have to say, is that bloom in there?

Looks a lot better than mine does...I like the blade appearing/disappearing...nice touch.
You might have some issues getting Simon's hands to work well for a melee weapon without some serious adjustments since he designed them for firearms.
If you're planning on releasing this anytime soon that will save me the trouble of updating my light saber.
You ought to release it in a variety of colors so you can kill in style.
Seriously,for your first weapon you did a heck of a job.I like it a lot.
I'd whip it out on the next heavy breathing joker that tells you he's your father and whack him with it...
I liked the video too.

The texture isn't really that bad for a first model...
The force that the saber has when it hits someone is awesome! The character goes flying. The multiple animations are noticeable and the overall effect is achieved. Great job, Ply.

WOW! Very impressive and most entertaining. I really was rolling, watching the characters flying across the room. Could you make it a bit more powerful?

I haven't even looked into animation yet, so my hat is off to you there. Extremely well done for a "first" model. Mine was a box.

Best.

I love this, all it needs now are some lazer projectile weapons instead of the instant hit ones and you have some Star Wars type magic going on.

Thanks for the comments, everyone! Makes me feel really good!

I made the model and animated it in Milkshape 1.8.4 . I am not sure.... how I did the texture, though, lol. I used Unwrapper Classic to make a basic texture map, then colored on it, and imported it into Milkshape for use on the model, but then I used Milkshape's weird little Texture Map Editor thingy to get them looking right on the model in Milkshape.... but I don't think the end product uses what Milkshape did to it because the texture on the handle has a bit of red on the side, but it was perfectly grey in Milkshape.

I'll be uploading the light sabre sometime soon. I'm still using it for testing and tweaking.

If stuck, you can unwrap the mesh to make a UV map in wings3d, its free and really easy to use, its great for doing a quick UV map.

Idea: On the blade go into Photoshop/GIMP or whatever and delete little sections to make it look as if its glowing. so you make some areas transparent at the edges so it looks more glowing

I think I'm going to release it along with my Mod so people who download it will have something to play with demonstrating the new features.

As an update... I have added a new animation. For something to think about, this animation does not correspond to ANY hard-coded actions in FPSC, not even ones that I or Airslide have added. And yet... this animation is useable at any point during gameplay. You'll find out how when I release the new additions to the Mod.

Armor and money counters on the hud aye?
has that always been in your mod...? or is that something you were just keeping a secret until someone noticed it? lol.

That aside.

it looks good for a first weapon! my only gripe is if you could make the actual blade itself part transparent, that would give to the effect...considering you cant make it put off light like an actual lightsaber...(assuming that fpsc lets semi transparent textures. . . . . .)

Binding variables to numeric HUDs? Yes... well, it's ALMOST always been in my Mod, lol. But it has been there for a while now.

I'll see if I can make the blade semi-transparent. Thanks for the suggestion!

Hey Ply, one problem with a saber. My friend does Star Wars lighsaber glows, and we noticed that the glow is never the same for 2 consecutive frames. So you'd need to make about 20 or 25 textures with different kinds of glows and make them change randomly about every 1/50 of a second, or you could mod your mod (ugh, confusing!) and make it possible. There are probably other possible solutions, but those are just off the top of my head. THAT IS STILL AMAZING! Now if we could just get a blaster rifle and a stouker concussion rifle...
Amazing for a first model Ply, but, while I couldn't do anywhere near that well, there are a couple things I would really like to see. Idle sounds(see below), a little more model detail, and a glow(see below) that changes and includes a light. JUST CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISIM PLY, DON'T TAKE IT PERSONALLY. I COULD NEVER DO ANY BETTER!

Oh, one more thing. I can send you real sound effects for every conceivable possibility of anything you can do with a lightsaber. This includes idle sounds, clash sounds, take out/put away sounds, hitting wall and leaving burn mark(another good idea to possibly implement) sounds, etc. This will all be available free of charge to anyone who wants them. I also have Stormtrooper talking sounds, blaster rifle and pistol sounds, and who knows what else?! I just need to get them from my friend and I'll send them to people, most likely for free(definetly free for Ply), but it may have a modest charge of like $1 or $2 so I can pay for other stuff for my game. Sorry, but a guy's gotta make money somehow. The lightsaber ones will be free, because otherwise Ply would have no way to release his model without paying me, assuming he uses them, but the Stormtrooper ones and gun ones might cost a little.

My first model was an assault rifle made out of blocks, followed shortly by SpongeBob (lol don't ask)

I see you're having fun with the AirMod stuff I noticed the spark when a bullet hits it, is that part of the model, a decal, or a muzzleflash type thing?

Very nice; is it just me, or did it look like the saber was deflecting some bullets (like the real lightsabre)?

It's a pretty pimped out version of AirMod's blocking. It's a compound system with start,idle and end blocking animations as well as interrupts (you can hold block indefinately). The spark decals are spawned according to special limbs in the model. It's a really cool system with quite a bit of potential when tied in with the other features found in AirMod and Ply's Mod.

Thanks for all the comments, guys!

@petsall:

I will most likely do a retexture before letting it go. It's not alllll the way finished yet, lol. I may be adding some more animations to it, too.

You are free to retexture it when it does get released with the Mod. And if you do retexture it, be sure to send it to me, I'd love to see it

@Crusader:

I'd love to get the lightsabre looking proper and all, but I do have to think about what's best for the Mod as a whole. If I can come up with a way to make the lightsabre look great and through such an addition provide possibilities beyond this single model, I'd definitally do it. However, as is always the case with my Mod, gameplay comes first and foremost. If I have some gameplay additions I want to implement, then anything graphically oriented will be put on hold.

I would like to have those sounds, though! Idle, Takeout, put away, swinging, and laser deflecting sounds would work great. Those are about all I need right now.

@Airslide:

Muzzleflash type thing.

@KeithC:

Sharp eye! Yes, I was deflecting bullets during the video, showing off the new blocking system of Ply's Mod which was made possible with a great deal of help from AirMod.

I have definitally enjoyed making the light sabre, and I really enjoyed playing with it!

I will hopefully be making another video with it after the retexture and some more......"stuff".. has been added.

Ply, I couldn't agree more; working on the mod for the use of one weapon would be kind of pointless. You could just add a new scripting command, which I don't think is too hard (note, I don't have DbPro), like switchtexture or something like that, but don't worry about it, but if you have spare time and feel like working on auxillary stuff for your mod, then I would like it, but it's your deal. Anybody else with DBPro could make it anyway.
I'll send you those effects as soon as I get them. Anyway, have fun with this model; it's really cool!
EDIT: If he's not willing to release them to me, you can find them online they're in a pack of like 200 sounds but those include stormtrooper and blaster rifle and pistol sounds and force sounds like lightning, push, pull, etc. A like ability thing would also be really cool, like have an extra button for abilities for stuff like Bioshock and Star Wars. Not that I'm subtly hinting anything . No seriously, I'm not. Just pointing out a fact, DON'T FREAK OUT PLY! AH! WHAT'S THAT CREAKING NOISE! WHO JUST CAME IN MY HOUSE! AHHHHHH!!! Haha, just kidding!

@some kid I think you can do it with S4 Mod, airmod, or the newest un-released version of Ply's mod. I'd recommend Ply's mod because it enables dual wielding as well and also enables vehicles. I'm just looking at vehicles though, S4 gives faster gameplay with 2 timers, look at their threads.
