Just started getting back into Blender and also experimenting with Lithunwrap. Here's the the first product of these experiments...

93 Faces

Any comments or things I need to avoid doing in future models?

And download.

Feel free to use this however you want.

(Semi-Offtopic Question): For all the textured models I've managed to produce so far, you have to load the object, load the texture, and then texture the object with the texture image. How can I make the object texture appear automatically, like most models seem to do?

To make the texture appear automatically the model needs to be uv mapped, uv unwrapped and a texture painted to go along with the uvmap then apply in 3dsmax or whatever modeling software you use and export to .X file with materials.

Ok, thanks. Unfortunately blender won't import the model back in for some reason, I'll keep trying...
