Hello i would like to show you people my first base mesh created in maya i hope to import this into zbrush and do lots of cool things with it

however i am having trouble with mirror geometry as it will not mirror on a correct axis and will not merge with the current mesh

heres a picture of what it looks like so far

The mirror issues is because your mesh's pivot point is offset, hold down the "D" key in maya and you can move it, move it to the border of the mesh (The centerline where you want to mirror it) and release D, it should work now.

And the base mesh looks pretty good, thought it's hard to tell anything from the screenshots since they're all red and stuff.
Mind showing a wireframe?

That mesh is pretty bad. What you want for a organic model is for the edge loops to go naturally around the model, with even spacing.
If you don't understand that this screenshot of the model I made for the TGC compo, not saying it's prefect, but you see how the edges go.

Well I can see from the mesh that even if it would be made back to just quads the flow would still be all over the place, I suggest looking at tutorials for modeling organic bodies, one that is especially good and free is the "Modeling a low poly model" at http://www.montagestudio.org And yes, it is for blender but the same rules apply for maya, just different ways of doing things.
