I remember reading about a few programs that did this a year ago (taking your 3D model, and converting the UV's into a cutout diagram that you can print and then glue together to make your models out of paper or cardboard) but I cant seem to find anything searching the net yet.

Anyone know of any programs that do this? Prefferably with a free trial, though I doubt that will happen.

Well technically if you have your models Uvs layed out you can just print it and you should be able to put it together.

Check this out. I stumbled on this a few weeks back.

I think the thing you need is Pepakura Viewer or something.

Yeah I found that program after I posted. It seems to do the job. Free trial is fine, it just doesnt let you export the diagram as an image, yet it lets you copy it to the clipboard or print screen it... weird. So that'll work.

And about the UV's, you cant just print the uvs out because they're deformed. UV's are never perfect representations of their scale and shape, thats why you get small distortions in textures if you're not careful. This program makes sure all uv's maintain their shape.

I haven't used it a lot, but Blender now comes with a plugin called Unwrapper that unwraps a mesh and lays the faces out in a way that's good for paper modelling. It seems pretty good, only problem is it exports to a wierd format, I had to open it in Illustrator I think.

Lazerus, you just go to open and select your model, then hit unfold. Then tweek to your desire.

bmac, I might look into it but this seems to be doing what I need so far.
