I have tried the best I can but I can't seem to get around animating 3D models. So my quetion is, is it possible to create a 3D game with only static models ? (think chess pieces in a RPG setting). If the gamplay was campelling would any one be interested in such a cocept?

How would you do combat without animations? ive seen games with static models most of the time its fine there are lots of games like that but they are always animated during combat I dont see a way to get around that, I would suggest eather get a modeler for your project or learn to animate.

if the concept was good enough then yeah you could maby get away with about 1/2hours of gameplay for the average gamer, hardcore gamers wouldnt be that intrested, unless the AI was a work of genuis of course

am lookin into a part time modeling job, if you drop off a few concept pics, i would happily make one or two

You could easily make a Tower Defense game with just static models. And those are awesome.

Final Fantasy 1! They used static 2D characters in order and just moved them forward and back to represent an attack. You could do something similar to emulate it in 3D.

This is true I forgot about FF1 there is also the tower defense games, however how many hardcore gamers and game creators are gonna go any farther than just checking it out?

You could create a flight sim/space shooter/car driving game with very little animation. Just put the models in the game and move them around.

If ship explodes, hide it and display your explosion fx. If a car crashes, just flip the whole thing end over end.

Ofcourse if you're fixed on an RPG style, that probably doesn't help a great deal You're going to need plenty of 2D artwork as well. Things like icons for various items/potions/spells and so on. As well as textures for the models and terrain. Who's producing them?

And you can always buy model packs. The Dark Matter models are not the greatest, but they are handy place fillers

Thanks for your input guys: I think I'm going to go for it, It will be a learning experience if anything, and also a sort of design challenge for myself. I've already started on some concept models, if any one is interested I will post some pics shortly.

Thanks lazerus, I'm at work at the moment, so as soon as I get home I will post a rendering of what I would like my hero character to look like, actually I'll just upload a 3ds file of it, so feel free to go nuts.

I started writting games many years ago on the Spectrum, in them days it was all about game play. I feel nowadays the is too much emphasis on special effects and graphics. I dont think I have played an original game in some time ( I am looking forward to little big planet as this seems quite original). You may want to have a look at some older games from the spectrum and C64 for some inspiration. Good places to try are home of the underdogs and retro remakes. Some of the games a quite simple and should be a point to start from.

I give up with this banner thing as it never seems to work for me. I will now stop wasting mu time.

edit
ive opened it in school with max 8 i think, i and ive noticed a few problems with the mesh, ive fixed them though but just so you know, when you want the vertices to be welded into one select the verts section in modification, itl have a section called weld, youll see a number next to 'selected' change that to 99999 or whatever and selct your verts, and hit selcted , they should be welded now,

btw watch out you dont select other verts aswell,

any perticula theme with it?

Thats the minimalist characterisation I was looking for.
Dude keep in touch, I have some more ideas, (do you think I should move this to the WIP board?)

Take as much time as you need. Whilst you are doing that, I will start putting together a small design doc, and mayby create some enemy models for the hero to fight. Since I still feel that a fully functional RPG can be created with minimal to no animation, that leaves me to ponder on a new format for battles. So far I'm thinking early final fantasy with a battle-card twist, what do you think?

Consider it sent, if anyone else wants to take a ponder at the design doc just let me know, (so far its only a three page word doc, but over time a suspect it will grow larger, and probably wildly cluttered lol).

kk got it,

ill take alook over a brew

edit

first thoughts,

you seem to have a good understanding of the average user, along with a pretty good concept, by actually forcing the player to react with a emotional response then you can get the player to deluge further into the game,

btw

I have a pretty good idea for the dark/light concept and after alot of scorunging around, these indies seem to have a sort of same idea, here the game is called flipside,

but more or lees on the same scale with the creatures, mutating or 'flipping into the darker realms of the human mind, to show man in its ture twisted glory, allowing certain abillties or bonus' depending on the choices they make.

I would be happy to help with anything but for now am workin on my new AC, which will be my centre piece.

cheers

Thanks for all your help and input, I'll have to look at the link at home as YouTube has been blocked at my work premisses. Keep an eye out for a WIP under the title: Project Pandora.
