It really depends on what I'm trying to do.
If the object can be made from a lathe, I definitely start with vertex modeling and just apply a lathe modifier (for example, a push pin). If I'm using a reference photo, I might also use vertex modeling here as well.
Box modeling I use mainly for characters, organics, and some buildings.
Plane extrusion is a method I just found I'm not half that bad with. I created a whole complex of buildings by just using one reference image and one plane. I might make a tutorial on this method soon.
