So I am reading my local paper while on break from work and my eye catches a headline at the bottom of the page...

SOURCE:http://www.newsday.com/news/printedition/world/ny-wojapa245895493oct24,0,783121.story

Quote: "
"Japanese gamer 'murders' virtual husband, police say"

TOKYO - A 43-year-old player in a virtual game world became so angry about her sudden divorce from her online husband that she logged on with his password and killed his digital persona, police said yesterday.

The woman, who has been jailed on suspicion of illegally accessing a computer and manipulating electronic data, used his ID and password to log onto the popular interactive game "Maple Story" to carry out the virtual murder in May, a police official in the northern city of Sapporo said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of department policy.

"I was suddenly divorced, without a word of warning. That made me so angry," the official quoted her as telling investigators and admitting the allegations.

The woman, a piano teacher, had not plotted any revenge in the real world, the official said.

She has not yet been formally charged. If convicted, she could face up to five years in prison or a fine up to $5,000.

Players in "Maple Story" create and manipulate digital images called avatars that represent themselves, while engaging in relationships, social activities and fighting monsters and other obstacles.

In virtual worlds, players often abandon their inhibitions, engaging in activity online that they would never do in the real world. For instance, sex with strangers is a common activity.

The woman used login information she got from the 33-year-old office worker when their characters were happily married to kill the character. The man complained to police when he discovered that his online avatar was dead.

The woman was arrested Wednesday and taken 620 miles from her home in southern Miyazaki to be detained in Sapporo, where the man lives, the official said.

The police official said he did not know if she was married in the real world.

Bad online behavior is usually handled within the rules set up by online worlds, which can ban miscreants or take away their virtual possessions.
"

5 years in prison????, $5,000.00 fine????

I always knew the media likes to ride on these gamer stories, but I never imagined the police would get involved in something like this.

So a warning to Mods.... If you slap my online persona be prepared to face an assult charge! lol.

The "murder" is irrelevant though, the fact is, she "hacked" into another user's account. Rightly or wrongly, that is illegal (in pretty much any country)

lol. The issue is she logged in with someone else's credentials. I imagine the law makes no distinction with a maple story account vs a gmail account that may be used for business.

Now, that said, in the US, it's pretty unlikely a person illegally accessing a game account would be subject to the maximum extent of the law. But Tokyo who knows.

Word of warning, don't overstep your boundaries online. The Internet is serious business.

True enough. I just hate the way the media spins this into a gamer story. And they make all gamers out to be "miscreants" acting out our devious desires, and "abandon[ing] our inhibitions". And to wrap the illegal act into a whole story under a murder of an online persona.

And to be honest, when I first glanced the Headline I was sure I was about to read an article about an FPS gamer who went postal. Then I read "Maple Story", and was like WTF???

Wow, the internet IS serious business. Now why would she have his password anyway? She did have her own caracter to fiddle with, didn't she? Some things you just keep to yourself, passwords and the TV remote.

...wait, 43 year old maple story player?

That's the hardest i've laughed in a long time.

Anyway, back on topic, I ran across something similar a few days ago in the news.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/connected/main.jhtml?xml=/connected/2008/10/22/dltheft122.xml

Quote: "Two Dutch teenagers have been convicted of stealing virtual items in a computer game.

The youngsters, aged 14 and 15, were sentenced to community service by a judge at Leeuwarden District Court.

The pair were found guilty of theft after coercing a 13-year-old boy to transfer a virtual amulet and virtual mask to their player accounts in the online fantasy adventure game RuneScape.

"These virtual goods are considered goods under Dutch law, so this is theft," said the court in a ruling.

The 15-year-old youth was sentenced to 200 hours community service, while the youngster's 14-year-old accomplice received a 160-hour community service order.

The ruling is the latest in a string of cases concerning virtual theft. In 2007, another Dutch teenager was accused of stealing virtual furniture from rooms in the online game Habbo Hotel, while in 2005, a Chinese gamer was stabbed to death following a row over a virtual 'dragon sabre' sword.

A study by the BBC found that nearly 500,000 people in developing nations earn a wage making virtual goods in online games to sell to other players.

Around 80 per cent of those workers are based in China, and earn an average salary of £77 per month for their online endeavours. "

Stabbed to death over a virtual sword... wow.

@matuka

xD That was amazing.

And yeah, it's the "hacking" thing, not the virtual murder.

I say we should all go download some free "RAMs", after all, who knows when Google might send you a "Trojan Horse" to "eat it".

IMO, it wasn't even hacking. It sounds her 'husband' gave her his account info when they were together. That's not hacking at all. He was retarded enough to give a stranger (wife or not) his login info. He should have been smart enough to change it after he divorced her. Obviously she's going to his password, because it was given to her by him! I don't think this will hold up in court...

I don't think they were married in "real" life. Even still I agree with the rest of your points. From the article it doesn't seem she "hacked" his account. He must have given her the info at some point. What I found most strange about the story was the fact that he called the police when he found his account was deleted. That must have been one hillarious phone call.

And about the MapleStory murder, I thought it was fake the whole time I was reading it, until I saw there was nothing indicating this.

Matuka, yeah, that link was funny, so funny I think its gotta be fake. Seriously, downloading RAM?!? For a low-end game like Maplestory you shouldn't even NEED anymore RAM than what? 256MB? These days, I laugh at anyone with 512MB or less. It just doesn't work good unless you only like checking your email after a 5 minute wait.
