Any advice greatly appreciated.

I would like to make a very simple 3D model consisting of 2 rectangular cubes and a cylinder.

These will be used to simulate a simple Tank.... body, turret, gun.

I am trying to use this to understand how DGDK works when manipulating limbs, and what programming is involved.

Can any people please advise me what would be one of the simplest and free 3D modeling programs that can do the following.

1) have capability of moving the pivot point of the various objects.
2) would be nice if it also had object parenting capability.
3) produce output in *.X format or some format that can be converted to *.X format.

Thanks in anticipation

Blender CAN do this, but you wanted simple and at first look, blender scares anyone. You could try wings, it can convert to .x and I think it can parent (I haven't personally used Wings so I wouldn't know exactly but this is what I think) and it should probably be able to move pivot points.
I'd say Wings, since you wanted easy and Wings is very easy and powerful!

Thanks for that.
I will have a look at Wings.

I did try Blender, but I keep getting lost in the menus ..... my brain is just getting too old.

I tried DeleD 1.81 LITE but that is too simple to have the required features.
From memory last time i tried Maya PLE , but it had some strange propriety format for saving files.

I cant believe how hard this exercise has been and how much time has been wasted just to find something to do this simple task.

Yeah the PLE has a different file format than the regular version.

@ Alucard94
It looks like Wings 3D is a no-go.
One can group and ungroup meshes, but I can not find any limb or parenting capability.
Although it allows objects to pivot around their center point, it does not allow the movement of that pivot point to any location other than the objects center point. Makes it hard to pivot a tank gun up/down from its end point.

@ FPSCX10 LORD
Had a look through that list.
It looks like most of those will not allow me to do what I require.
I will have to have a closer look at Truespace, just to be certain, as I have not looked at it yet.

It is starting to look like I may have to learn Blender after all, unless some person can come up with another tool.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

WHY OH WHY O LORD IS LIFE ALWAYS SO HARD ???????

Ah didn't know Wings didn't do that.
Try Truespace, it should be able to do it, and if everything fails you, just learn Blender, the UI is freaking genius once you learn to master it.
