at the moment iam short on time, so i need a base mesh for my current valkrye project, is it okay to use a free mesh and completly modify it to suit my needs, would that be still classed as plagurism?

It depends what you are using it for and where the mesh came from as well. Sites like Turbosquid do not allow deviations to be made. It's bad ethics to rework anothers model and claim it your own. Even if you end up keeping only a few verts, IMO.

It doesn't matter what you do if the game is free and the model doesn't have any license associated with it.

I guess it depends on the license.
If someone has made a model and sais that you can do whatever you want with it. Then I guess its fine.
The best idea would be emailing the author and ask.

Really, you should just take the model anyway. Just don't claim it as your own.
