I have never understood the fascination of IRC channels. You have to load up a special application to join them, you have to select the right server... it's like going back to the days of BBS' and early modem comms.

I get a few multi-user chat requests everyday on MSN for DB programmers, they happen spontaneously, and the chats come to you when there is a subject at hand - rather than you going to the chat only to find several conversations going at once or loads of people on idle...

I agree, if the DB-Team was to add a Java/Flash chat room to the site, that would be a big hit.

I have some flash/MySQL chat software that I baught before for £5, if there are enough requests i'll shove it on my website.

You can't really claim that IM multi-user chat facilities are an IRC killer; Those sorts of chat-room-on-the-fly thingys are still semi-private. I can't join in the conversation unless you know me. Though that raises the point that if you wanted to speak to me, you'd probably know me ...

I find IRC lends itself to to communities much better than a 100+ contact list. I for one will be in that channel ... unless it's deserted in which case I'll moan a bit.

Quite right shizzle. Many people will probably become regulars on this channel. Newbies will be able to come into the chat and find out answers to questions easier than the forum. I think it will be a hit. Its already growing popular

Hello,

I for one, as a newbie, support any way of getting help. I came from those old day's with the modem comms so I can deal with it. I have a Linux system right next to my main system just for that kind of use.

hehe - about 6 months ago I threw away a modem in it's box that claimed "TWICE the speed of a conventional 100bps modem!".
