As I'm only really learning DB I was wondering which is easier a 2d or 3d program? What are the main advantages and disdvantages of each?

Please help

Thanx, Rose

2D is slow in DB.
3D forever!

5 golden rings
(of kolbasa)

it's not a matter of easier/harder, and the advantages/disadvantages of both have been debated about a million times.

the mistake most often made is deciding that you want to make a 2D or 3D game without deciding what the game will be. when you come up with a design for a game, you have to choose your poison for implementation depending on the effect you have.

personally, i am more blown away by a well-developed 2D game. call me old school, but there's just something pure and simple about commander keen....

which is more complicated, TEXT or MAKE OBJECT CUBE? none really. the complexity will grow from your game design. you can do some incredibly complex things in 2D and some incredibly simple things in 3D, and vice versa.

i find 3d alot easier than 2d. The only 2d i normally ever use is for menus for my 3d game, ive programmed numerous 2d games which took longer to make than the 3d ones, and where very crappy. I hate 2d so much ive even started to make some of the menus for newer games in 3d (like the startopia menu, thats what im aiming for in some of my new games).

I'm currantly programming afew 2D programs
(Lit bit of a slow down here and there, hope DBP works
faster with 2D sprites when it's fully functional. )

4 turtle doves

Rose, niether is easier - just depends what you want to create. I mean a 2D and 3D pong work almost identically, just rather that 2D images your using 3D models

Hmmmmmmmmm, depends of u and how good u wanna it to be. Like, I'm a ok coder, but a crap designer. So if I should make a 2D game with nice sprites or bmps should looks really crap. Though, I think it's easier to make 3D Models, so I stick with 3D. But all my stuff sucks like the logo of my game and menus, but the 3D is ok The language is almost the same for 2D and 3D using DB

Maybe if u good designing and make textures u could join me So I could learn design and u programming
P.S: I'm not flirting with u...lol

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Advantages
2D:
Easier maths
1 less dimension to work with
easier graphics
Easier to learn

3D:
Better looking
Faster
Easier manipulation

They each have their ups an downs really, play around an see what you think is more "homly"

WTF is with those pies, swans, keys, rings, doves & hens???

i still can't get it until now!!!

why dun u all make it easier like:
---------------------------------

60 billion hot pies contaminated in McDs
70 trillion swans a mating like minks
80 zillion golden keys stuck up my anus
50 octillion golden rings of kolbasa thrown at Harry Potter
40 zillion turtles doves sue John Woo for employing illegal doves from Vietnam to act for Face Off 2
30 gejillion french hens caught french kissing with french fries in France

if no one explain wtf is all this, well i made one myself! i got one extremely bad, nasty & disturbing annoying words to get people's FULL attention!!!

Thanx!!
So many different options!
Agh!!!
My terms of Reference is due tomorrow, I'm supposed to have a plan for my game and a design!!!! I only have a few scribbled ideas!

Just in case I never mentioned it before, I have to write an educational game for 11 year olds, so I chose to write it in DB, the problem is I don't yet know DB!! The prototype is due at Christmas!!!! AAAGGHHHH!!!!
Also my laptop is dead!! I have no home computer, sob, sob.

I'm still playing with the caverunner demo, maybe I could edit it to make it educational?

My lecturer also got me DarkMatter, if any of you have used it, whats it like?

I don't even want to think about Christmas yet? I hate Christmas Shopping cause the town is always sooooo packed!

educational for an 11 year old... hmm
well what i'd do is make a simple Tomb Raider Style puzzle game

add some simple puzzles like, filling a bucket to weight up something to make a bridge fall to get to the other side. You have scribbled on the wall the weight one side with a small riddle that says how much you need the other - and then several buckets which they fill at a small well at the side and they have to think of how many of the buckets they need or something

DarkMatter is a great upgrade for DB as it adds memblocks which i think are just the best update ever
has some other cool updates thou and a pretty cool library of premade models lol

i mean if you think about it simply, the interaction of the character and movement is pretty striaght forward, and can be taken from the demos (althought really it is simple enough to figure out) ... the one thing that might be a trouble is making a world the character can collide with - and checking possible collision for object interaction
but then again you haven't said the game has to look profesional, hopefully just need to be the framework that can have a more pro modeller to sort out the artwork of later - i would with that assume the grade would depend on time, style and ability to get your idea from paper into working code
i've set a good few tasks like this in my time, so many students fail thinking about the wrong aspects - suchas presentation than a working framework.

well good luck

pretty simple language once you get most of Microsofts jargon out of the way
