heres a project am working on, its an space ship

its going to to be animated, well ive already started to rig it, missile pods, cannons, its going to be my dry run up to the rest of the scene just to see if its applicable or not,

yes i know i should have created it out of one 'box but i thought it'd be esayier to simulate damaged/destroyed areas of the crafts's

what do you think so far,?

note thats my custom material not the texture, still got to add that part to the matt but itll do for now,

Hmm, I'd add that flick thing on the left wing to the other side, or it'll look weird....

Is this like a space/air bomber plane, like the longswords in Halo?

aero dynamics, and slim line designs count for nothing in space as there is no particels for it to collide with

and the reason for the one wing is that the other will be 'clipped in on the battle cursier fighter bay, sort of like the droides off star wars clone wars //i think' those werid tanks with the troops in them, thats the type of depolyment method am going for

ahhh, sorry if i didnt make that clear

yeah its goin be mainly used in space fights, although i was looking into using the SGA (stargate atlantis) type theme , i was very intrested in the episode 'the seige I,II,III it looked amaziing but i would have to modify the ships to make it more realistic, am actually looking for a areo dynamics tester of sorts, like a digital wind tunnel, that wont blow my buget or 4ghz 2gb,ram cpu -_- piece of crap, although i got it for £350 so its okay

yeah,,, i think i rambelled on there -_- anyway any chance anyone knows any digital wind tunnels ANYMORE ANYS AND AM GOIN FREAKIN CRACK!!!!!
i am sane,, honest

I actually like the fact that the model is not symetrical, Dont forget sci fi is essentially a furturistic fantasy. I do remember one of the wing commander games having a space ship that wasnt symetrical and why should it be.

A few pointers though. It looks very boxy, use the chamfer tool a little around hard edges to give a more organic shape, though dont go nuts on it as it will send the poly count through the roof.
If you can spare a few polys after this add some "nurbling" ie panel details if your poly count allows.

Its difficult to see from the render but you texture makes your ship look like it has acne, It may be just the ambient light setting or the specular lighting. Prehaps if you can blend the white dots in a little or reserve the highlighting to just the edges it may look better.

I started with Max making spaceships and its a good place to start, good luck with your project

I give up with this banner thing as it never seems to work for me. I will now stop wasting mu time.

sorry should have made it more clear, thats just my maerial i use to define areas, it renders funny like that, but it makes it esayier to distuinguish the parts, and yes i have made a symetircal version now, but i am planning to create a oringinal aswell, i should have updated the pics but ive been swamped(still am) ive edited the harsh faces on the wings, to make them more areo dynamic, bringing them to the atmosphere as well so that they can have a few dogfights

edit heres a render so far

cheers

To be honest i liked the unsymmetricalness. If anyone has played eve online, most ships are not symmetrical, at least the caldari ships aren't at any rate. Any who great model

A...W...E...S...O...M...E... That is amazing, but I have to agree that it should be symetrical. Otherwise it looks kind of wierd. Either way, it'll still be amazing!

Your modelling is good, but your texturing and lighting could use some improving. The problem is that it's very hard to actually determine the shapes your ships are using. They're confusing to look at, detailed yes, but when you try to discern the actual geometry of the ships it gets pretty ambiguous. Things like decals, bounced lighting, and wear and tear around the edges can help improve the ability to discern the geometry.

Looks nice, the latest one is a little too complicated for my taste but it definitely proves your skills. All you need to work on is your textures and the stretching that you have on some of the models.

Looks pretty good, a little bit messy to be honest, and a lot of stuff just seems to be random extrusions, I like the little normal mapping though. I would enter that comp but after seeing some of the amazing entries I got sort of smacked in the face by reality.

i understand what your saying alucard, and i have been wanting to change the locking cabal (the mehcanism)(those things that look high poly since they are ) and ill post some wireframes when i get a chance,

cheers for the positive feedback people, and i have played eve online,, for about 3 days before it became mind numbngly annoying lol.

ill look into eve 'blueprints' see if i can go and get some insperational ideas although ill keep it original

and for the texturing i plan on using those normal maps, they where just a test to see how well they would fair, and to get some practice in on making them,

the texture stretching on some areas, is because i didnt have time to uvmap them.

just for any provokers, (not many left around here)
You cant say ive gone and stole these because i have a stage by stage renders, old habits come in handy lol

oh and i still have to make the other entire crusier 'wormwood' and the earth, destroyed moon, asteriod belt and a shield for the earth

just for a point of reference, finds a random picture,,, makes a outline,,,

thats about the area ive done, that was one of my original idea pics so youll get the jist of what itll look like with a texture, from FF12 The 'IFRIT'

heres those wirframes you were asking about,

i have removed the cabal and started designing a new version, ive also emoved some of the objects that where crowding areas of the mesh in the render, such as the small fighter bay from the arial viwe and other obstructing objects,
heres the topside viwe

since its the final picture at the end that only matters, i can afford to be greedy with the poly count
its 140 000 at the moment, and as you can see i could easily knock it down to about 80k?
am thinking, 1 mil for this cruiser, 500k for the wormwood, and another 500k for the other ships and debris, it is a ar after all , 100k for the earth, destoyed moon and the debris belt

cheers cb

To be honest, I really don't like the cruiser. It looks way too complex, like someone tossed mismatched parts on randomly.

To me, a cool ship is something with smooth armored hull plating on top, and (not too) complex greeble on the bottom. Obviously, they can't all be like that, but the design is cool.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Heres the texture am playing around with so far,

i have been dabaling between the earth and the ships, texture and uv mapping, its been quite fun really since i know get to play around with the looks of everything, i cant actully post up my textures since theres about 30 of them, i just done them every now and then and evetually it grew and grew, i will eventually create one massive 2048/2048 map and normal map for it.

as for wormwood i started on some sketchs and now its all starting to take shape in my mind and paper

cheers, next update will be when i ve started wormwood

cheers cb

sorry i cant...

, i hit a snag, after a power surge i lost my entire computer and the external drive connected to it at the time. These disks had thousands of pounds worth of software and models, projects and a few paid projects, so i cant

note to people 15 amp surge protection IS TOO HIGH i reccommend 5-8 amp

also if anything this will give me time to create a totaly new style for me to work with, this has happened before so i know the drill (although thats why i bought a external hard drive)-_-
