Hi,

I've been getting this strange shading on some of my faces when modelling in Blender:

I've always assumed this was a bad thing, some problem with the normals or something. Come to think of it, though, I've never read about this anywhere, though.

Does anyone know what this is? Is it a bad thing? And how do I get rid of it?

Thanks,

Venge

It's because the angle is too sharp at the bottom. See how the vertex normals are pointing down on the corners? Try bevelling the edge to smooth the curve a bit.

I have CDO. It's like OCD, but the letters are in alphabetical order, like they should be.

I don't get it . If it depends on angle, why doesn't it occur on cubes? I tried beveling it, and that seemed to get rid of it, but it raises the polycount unnecessarily, and I'm going for a fairly low-poly model I can use in a game.

Huh. Well, that's the solution I usually use, but I don't make many low-poly models. You mentioned a cube, so I tried a few things with that and it looks like the cube's vertex normals are projected at an angle from the adjacent faces, like so:

But if the side faces are deleted and the normals recalculated (Select all->Ctrl+N), the normals change to what you have:

I would try creating a face between the two edges you're having trouble with, recalculate the vertex normal and then delete the face. It's time-consuming, but if you really want to save on poly count I guess it's worth it.

I have CDO. It's like OCD, but the letters are in alphabetical order, like they should be.

Did you try selecting all faces and using CTRL-N? If that didn't work you might want to try and check your smoothing groups (I believe it's to select all faces and hit w or ctrl-w, not sure, and choose Set solid).

Set solid worked (it wasn't w or ctrl-w though, had to find it on the toolbar). Thanks for the help, guys!
