Hello,

Newbie has a question, hope it is not too stupid. Now that the backdrop command is obsolete, how does one create a backdrop?

There are countless methods and it really does depend upon the game genre, graphical style and personal choice.

Most techniques involve creating a 3D object and texturing it in some way, either zdepth locked or following the camera around - sometimes an object large enough to surround the whole world is used.

However you could also use draw to back and paste an image. In one recent project I just recoloured the backdrop and placed a ghosted image infront of it.

To be frank it is not a command I miss, because the 6x2 tile format was utterly pointless for just about every conceiveable application.

I'm on writing a 2d scrolling shooter & I just used a very large cloud textured plane that follows the camera. I found that by tilting the plane to face down by about 30 degrees and making the plane lag behind the camera creates an easy and effective parallax scrolling effect. Never would have found that if I'd kept using the backdrop.

Now I just need someone to explain how to texture a skysphere?????

Sky sphere.

That is what I have been looking for at the moment.

No answers here.

the same way you texture any object, if you want to uv map it then you need to do so in a program like lith unwrap i think

I have a website!!!
So go there: http://www.freewebs.com/darkb/index.htm
on second thought you probably shouldn't

I had this problem when i tried to test my sidescrolling shootem up from classic in Pro.

Basically in classic I'd textured the backdrop with a Star Field and then scrolled the texture. Then I'd made a new plain and positioned it just behind my player ship (z), textured it and used the scroll texture function but with the scroll speed abit faster than the backdrops. This gives a nice parralax type of effect.

Now in Pro Im having to use two plains with scrolling textures to get the same effect. I've not tried the skysphere yet. But as the camera is going to be fixed (well, at least for now) I dont think I really need to use the skyspere method.

So, if you want to, an easy way to get the effect is to make 2 Plains that are slightly bigger than the screen. Texture them, then use the scroll texture function.
