Caligari truespace is an excellent program to learn first. It is free and it is a very good program with lots of functions, but most importantly there are also a lot of free downloadable video tutorials on the site as well that teaches everything about truespace.

Blender is a powerful program as well that is freeware, But unfortunatly it tends to scare people away cause it has been considered to have a high learning curve to it. Personally, I've had a go with blender myself. Really, although I don't use it and like truespace more. I did'nt find it that hard to learn, I just don't like the layout. And blender has tutorials as well just google them.

On a side note though, If you plan to use these modelers mainly for Dark basic pro, The two that I have mentioned are probably about the most advanced and most importantly "compatible" 3d modelers you are going to find on the net that is freeware.

most modelers are compatible but usually through external programs for converting.

And last I recommend these modelers for four reasons TUTORIALS/ COMPATIBILITY / More ADVANCED than any other FREEWARE and well shareware 3d modelers out there. And the best part of these they are professional and FREE And loaded with tutorials that are easy to find.

By the way what is EASY? what maybe easy for one person could be very hard for another.

WindowsXP/SP2, Pentium 4 2.66 GHz, 1GB DDR Ram, Geforce 6600 256MB

Very true,I recommend you stick with the model side for a while though.
make sure you download the video tutorials as well.

Use Blender. Yeah, it's got a high learning curve, but once you get over that curve it's the most powerful out there that's free, and there are tons of tutorials for anything that you would want.

Yeah, you can rig models and animate them in Blender. It has some of the best animation tools going around at the moment.

The middle one has my vote.

Milkshape 3D and and Wings 3D are the easiest in my opinion, but Blender if you want power than simplicity.

Agreed, I'm currently writing an extensive tutorial on creating cutscenes in Blender.

Don't use Milkshape 3D for modeling, as it only supports tri's, which makes mesh handling and making proper edge flow very difficult. If anything, go with Blender 3D.

As you can see by Neodelito's post; it's the artist...not the software, that makes the difference. Nice work on the cat!

Very true....

You have to be good...

I mean, if you use 3dsmax (the best moddeller software I think lol), it doesnt mean you are a pro moddeler.

There are alot of threads about this. Just Search for "Software" , In the search engine.

Actually I did that the other day, And what I found were broken links, dead sites and so on.... those stickies are out dated and rarely ever updated....people will ALWAYS ask these types of questions whether there are stickies or not. I mean yes they will annoy some people, but as I see it...Nobody forces you to read these type of threads. What I find annoying is Instead of pointing NEW COMERS in the right direction or try to answer any of their questions, it's seems on these forums people seem to feel the need for sarcasm and use answers like READ THE STICKIES/GOOGLE IT/DO A SEARCH.....

Bottom line is sometimes searching for the right answer can take a very long time. Some answers that you find may lead to codes that no longer work cause they were written in well older versions of db. I do most of my own research by searching myself rather than asking questions and know first hand what it's like to bump into out dated material or ideas. As I said noone forces anyone to read these type of threads and it is not very hard to skip past them.

And that is because it's TRUE. Most questions posted here, even by people who aren't new, can be answered by a simple 1 second google search.

Umm, when was this about code? And besides, the model resource sticky thing barely has any dead links. Except some of the tutorial links, but all the software ones are perfectly fine.

I learned how to use Blender in less than 2 weeks. I would go with that. (it's free too!)

Sketchup might be useful for buildings and the like, but if you want to make serious stuff like weapons and characters then stay away from it.

Blender may be hard to learn, but is an equivalent power level to 3DS MAX and much cheaper.

well, first off: MS3D is easy to learn and easy to use, second: yes yes it supports only tris, but that doesnt rly make a change except if subdiv =P i use it and i see nothing wrong with models =P

i rly recommend MS3D =P
