I had some thoughts about this.

Maybe I could have a disk, filled with a BW gradient. I could overlay it on the thing, and point the white side to the light. Then I could blend the pixels of the item with the disk, but not where alpha=255.

If there's multiple light sources, it might not work out so well. Maybe one disk for every light source? I don't know, maybe with the blending, it'd work.

I have no idea what you're talking about LOL... But I have some seen some cool "2d" lighting demos that appear to make shadows and stuff.. I'd scope some of those out and see what comes to mind as solutions ...
