I haven't modeled in well over a month now, so I decided to sit down and spend an hour or two making an AK47:

Here's a wireframe:

And here's the texture map:

It's 1245 polies in Blender, but if you load it into DBP it'll go up to about 2500 because the quads are converted to tris.

Any feedback is welcome. I know the texture isn't very detailed and could use a lot of work.

The .x file is attached to my post.

I dunno why, but I really like the metal. It's got its own funky style. Try giving the wood some edge shine/grunge and some subtle scratched. The wood needs some lighting. Get a gradient and make it dark towards the bottom of the wood. Then if possible (I don't know what you used) set the blending mode to soft light and play with the opacity. Maybe duplicate the light and make it dark orange and lower the opacity again to give a more dramatic feel.

Just an idea. I can't really comment on the model as I'd love to be able to do that myself

Haven:

Thanks. I'll try.

Little Bill:

I just did exactly what you suggested and it looks a lot better! I'll post some renders when I get back from school later. Thanks.

You have some issues on the model itself, mainly there being more polygons in some areas than there are needed.
Mostly in this area.

The texture is very basic, but I've seen some of your work before and know that that is sort of your style. I'd prefer realistic but it's just a matter of taste.

Thanks Alucard, I'll fix that spot right now. And about the texture, ya, part of it is that I like that style, however part is also the fact that I can't texture realistically nearly as well as you, so when I try it looks like crap.

Great work and it's great to see someone actually hand paint there textures instead of using photographs. You will advance quicker in texturing because you are already starting to hand paint.
Are you using photoshop? I can give you some Pointers.
You don't actually seem to have a method just using the paintbrush. Remember there are Filters in Photoshop that will help you get started then you can handpaint over that. Remember to play around with the opacity and layer blending modes.

Thanks! I don't really like using photographs often because it usually takes away from the style I'm going for.

I'm using GIMP, and ya, I don't really have much of a method; I typically just draw the general shape with the paintbrush, then use the dodge/burn tool and smudge it up a bit. I would use more filters but there are so many, and I don't know what most of them do. Any tips on those would be appreciated.

I've changed the wood color slightly, made the whole thing darker and added some scratches to it:

The scratches I think could use some work but they'll do for now.

Ohh... Much nicer, even though the first one was good to begin with. Are there hands? Will this be free or commercial?

If A=B and B=C, are people still stupid?

It's free (download is in first post), but I'm not so sure about hands. I realllllly suck with organic modeling and rigging. I'm gonna try modeling a couple other guns, then maybe I'll decide to do some hands.

Hey, would you mind if I imported it into FPSC and gave it to the community, with 90% of credits going to you?

Sure, fine by me. However you might want to wait until I've got a couple done, because I'm gonna be making some more guns and possibly some other models; I'm working on an M16 assault rifle as I type this. Oh, and the download in the first post doesn't include the new texture. I'll probably set up some new downloads tomorrow once I've finished what I'm working on right now.

Cool, I would wait and release them as an FPSC ready free model pack. That would be pretty cool.

Here's the M16:

The texture is really plain, but then again it's a pretty plain gun.

Looks good! I would agree, the texture is a little plain. But a little work on that an this could be a great model! It actually is already a great model, and a nearly-great texture. Can't wait to see what else you come out with!

I'm not a gimp user because I prefer photoshop overall programs, although it's weather or not you can master the program then the program itself. Download some custom brushes, then set flow to like 3% of a base of gray, click around and then sharpen to get some metal. I recommend not using the smudge tool because it downgrades the quality.

Crusader:

Thanks.

Crav3:

Thanks for the tips. I've still got a bit of work to do when it comes to my metal so your tips will come in handy.
