Are there big downsides to mirroring uvs? If so, what? If not, cool. I know that mirroring prevents some creativity with asymmetrical textures, but are there other problems with mirroring uvs?
Thanks,
SamHH

yes, normal mapping can screw it over which creates artifacts on the 3d models. And also texture baking can create artifacts, though it is still possible to normal and bake maps with mirrors, all thats required is baking it Un mirrored, then mirror it and erase the baked original space where one of the Un mirrored was.

Like Crav said don't mirror the Uv if you going to bake or sculpt your model.
If you just going to paint your model then its fine , although I won't do that for the parts that going to stand out.
Like the face could be better uv mapped fully .. just the stuff that people will notice.

I mirror my uv maps all the time , so I could put more details in it.

Mirroring UV's is definitely a must on some models in order to make the most of your texture space. Just be smart about how you do things, and if you mirror across a seam, you can go in afterward and 'randomize' some of the geometry a bit without messing with your UV coordinates too badly. Obviously the aforementioned situations are outstanding situations in which you wouldn't want to mirror UV's, but otherwise, yes, definitely
